must they use the phrase "fire sale?"

california should outlaw the use of that phrase. but looks like the outlaws in this administration are working hard in their final days and having those "fire sales" to benefit their outlaw buddies.
on election day, the u.s. bureau of land management announced a dec. 19 auction of more than 50,000 acres of oil and gas parcels alongside or within view of three national parks in utah. environmentalists are calling the move a bush administration “fire sale” for the oil and gas industry while the national park service’s top official in the state said it was “shocking and disturbing.” - cbs news via think progress

why even vote for democrats

they cave in to everything.
democrats have decided to allow a quarter-century ban on drilling for oil off the atlantic and pacific coasts to expire next week, conceding defeat in a months-long battle with the white house and republicans set off by $4 a gallon gasoline prices this summer. - sfgate
spineless, cojonesfree brie eating, chardonnay swilling surrender monkeys.

wonder if they have ever seen our gentle neighbors in the channel, whose lives and welfare they just threw under the speedboat.

before they tell you there was no oil rig damage

during ike...know the truth.

oil industry web sites were reporting that as of wednesday at least three offshore rigs known as jackups remain missing and are presumed to be total losses and at least one deep-water production system sustained damage to its drilling package from last week's hurricane ike.

mong the category 2 hurricane's casualties was a rig that remained missing in the gulf of Mexico despite having been equipped with a global positioning system

....the maritime industry online news service lloyd's list gave an even gloomier assessment of ike's damage, saying "28 platforms have been demolished by the worst storm to hit the u.s. gulf coast since 2005."

the rigzone report and others renew questions about rig standards that were set in place after hurricanes ivan and katrina destroyed dozens of gulf rigs just a few years ago.

a press-register report after 2005's hurricane katrina found that oil platforms in the gulf were designed only to withstand borderline category 2 or 3 storms and that the anchors of big drilling rigs were only required to hold during conditions associated with minor tropical storms.- press register

you would think that with all that profit being raked in by the big oil boys, they would at least upgrade their rigs' safety.

w t f ??

proposed by the democrats? proposed by the democrats? you're freakin' kidding me.
the u.s. house of representatives passed legislation tuesday that lifts a longstanding ban on offshore oil drilling, opening most of the u.s. coastline to exploration. the package proposed by democrats would give states the option to allow drilling between 50 and 100 miles (80 and 160 km) off their shores. - reuters
what...they jumped ship to the lie-berman party?

watch the "offshore land grab" start in santa barbara.

while eyes are on the hijinks in denver

some serious decisions are being made without people noticing back here on the central coast....
nearly 40 years after a disastrous oil spill off the santa barbara coast galvanized the nation and gave birth to the modern environmental movement, the county board of supervisors is poised to vote today in support of offshore drilling. - latte times
calitics has more.

and, by the way...wtf is this?
the oil industry is holding an “energy mid-day reception for invited guests only” today at the democratic convention. “location: unannounced,” writes the houston chronicle. “the event is sponsored by the american petroleum institute, the american gas association and the edison electric institute.” - houston chronicle (ht think progress)

offshore drilling

so it won't help lower gasoline prices but is there an oil services corporation that would benefit by having irreplaceable coastal areas open for drilling?

so as expected, assembly republicans killed a bill that would bring california in line with every other oil-extracting state and charge obscenely rich oil companies for taking our natural resources out of the ground. - calitics

in the words of one republican

"it is sad that it was necessary that santa barbara should be the example that had to bring it to the attention of the american people. what is involved is the use of our resources of the sea and of the land in a more effective way and with more concern for preserving the beauty and the natural resources that are so important to any kind of society that we want for the future. the santa barbara incident has frankly touched the conscience of the american people." - richard nixon

our congresscritter lois capps

slams awol and mcsame.

santa barbara congressmember lois capps attacked efforts to lift the moratorium on new federal oil leases off the united states’ coast with all the gusto of a sugar-hungry six-year-old going after a birthday party piñata. capps, who represents one of the most oil-adverse districts in the united states, ridiculed the idea—which was put forward this past week by president george bush and the presumptive presidential nominee of the republican party john mccain—that the acute pump pain now being experienced by american gasoline consumers can be addressed by lifting the congressional moratorium on new offshore oil leasing in federal waters off the coast. “this is a dodge, a smokescreen,” capps said, “to keep our eyes off what we should be focusing on to really address the problem.” by that, capps said, congress and the federal government should be promoting conservation and alternative energy sources, including solar, wind, and biomass-derived fuels.

...in the days and weeks to come, capps said “use-it-or-loose-it” legislation would be forthcoming, meaning that oil companies that have sat on leased offshore lands for 10 years without taking meaningful steps to develop them will either be forced to sell them back to the federal government or surrender them due to lack of performance. in addition, she said a bill would be introduced to bring energy speculators under the same regulatory control as other commodities. eight years ago, the republicans passed a measure exempting oil traders from this oversight in what’s known as “the enron loophole.”

drilling through the spin

on offshore drilling....
  • lifting ban wouldn't be immediate fix for oil. if the bans were lifted tomorrow, it would be at least seven years - and likely as long as a decade - before the first oil began to flow off the coasts of florida, california and the eastern seaboard. - wsj
  • drilling ban is a myth, figures show. offshore drilling accounts for 27 percent of domestic oil production, and the vast majority of offshore u.s. reserves are already open to leasing by the industry, government data shows. - charleston gazette.

and...if there is spillage or an accident, taxpayers will be footing the bill for investigations and cleanup, like our state is "flush" with cash....not! psyche!  here in adobe disneyland (santa barbara) we've been having some horrendous pollution troubles with one oil company still here ...greka.
....but hiding among the decades of victories and vigilance, a small energy company — which bought its way into the county in 1999 by snatching up half-dead, run-down oil and gas leases — has been quietly earning a reputation as california’s number-one inland oil polluter with little to no fanfare from the media, environmentalists, or county officials. despite racking up more than 200 documented spills that leaked at least 500,000 gallons of oil, violating county air quality standards more than 300 times with releases of potentially deadly natural gases, and provoking a visit from the county’s hazmat teams 400 times in fewer than nine years — not to mention being successfully prosecuted by the federal government for violating the safe drinking water act — it wasn’t until four months ago, after a publicly visible spill just south of santa maria, that anybody in santa barbara county wanted to give greka oil and gas corporation the attention its track record demanded. - the santa barbara independent

if this "little company" is being lax in it's safety for it's onshore drilling operations, just think of spills of this magnitude hitting offshore.

when they talk about offshore drilling

they're only thinking about automobile traffic. they're not concerned with the harm done to another type of "traffic"....that of migrating whales through the santa barbara channel.

call your congresscritters. tell them we must stress alternative energy. we must begin stressing consuming less. we must begin stressing conserving more. show them this video and ask them how they might feel about harming these amazing, gentle creatures with the construction of more derricks, more boats for transport and the possibility of another major spill.

easy to solve problem....

mom-and-pop service stations are running into a problem as gasoline marches toward $4 a gallon: thousands of old-fashioned pumps can't register more than $3.99 on their spinning mechanical dials.

the pumps, throwbacks to a bygone era on the american road, are difficult and expensive to upgrade, and replacing them is often out of the question for station owners who are still just scraping by. - latte times

oil be missing you

distributorcapny explains the 'crude' truth:

we have many insatiable cravings – more hours of american idol, haagen-dazs® vanilla, watching the travails of britney, talking about who wears flag pins and brent crude.

what is brent crude?

brent crude is a type of sweet crude oil that is used as a benchmark for the prices of other crude oils. brent crude is the brad pitt of petroleum.

like the addict looking for his/her next fix, the us will pay almost anything to satisfy its cravings. and this craving for brent (as well as his cousins dubai crude, arab light and saharan blend) does not come cheap. he is no two-bit hooker, not the kind of guy larry craig would meet in reagan national airport. realizing he is one popular dude, brent has seen his value rise dramatically in the past 7 years, and especially in the past 2 years.

to say the us is dependent on brent crude is the understatement of the millennium. to keep the engine of this country running we are literally transferring our children’s future to other governments and national oil companies – including countries that have been training the very people we have been labeling “turrists’ who hate america.

it is no secret why we are in iraq – and it has nothing to do with roses and candy, spreading democracy or bush’s deep concern with bettering the life of the average iraqi. it has totally do with brent crude.
