while congress bickers

and pat themselves on the back, they aren't doing anything about a grown public health threat.
congress isn’t taking any meaningful steps to protect americans from the ever-increasing threat posed by antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the food industry, according to a new report issued on tuesday. every recent legislative attempt to stem the use of antibiotics in animals has been blocked by the farm and pharmaceutical industries — and public health researchers warn that’s putting americans at risk, even though the issue could easily be prevented with additional regulation. - think progress

fraud countrywide in america

or rather in bank of america.
a federal jury in manhattan sided with prosecutors who alleged countrywide financial corp. churned out risky home loans in a process called "the hustle" and then sold them to mortgage giants fannie mae and freddie mac.

the calabasas company, once considered the crown jewel of american mortgage lending, made big profits unloading loans that were later rendered worthless during the housing crisis in 2008.
the decision is the first civil fraud verdict against countrywide, and experts said the decision would probably invite more aggrieved investors to sue and could embolden other investigations aimed at countrywide or other banks. - latte times
we are "outraged" at computer software glitches on a program that is meant to help people...
let's see if the public is "outraged" at this blatant corruption that brought our country's economy to the brink and inflicted pain on fellow americans.

oh, and that mofo, angelo mozilo, former head of countrywide has a luxurious spread here in santa barbara. i think it's time to bring back public shaming. you see this criminal walking around the tony streets of montecito, tell him how treasonous he is to sell out his country's economic future. and kick him. hard.

we hate what you've done with the place

to our great disappointment, the rachel maddow blog has changed formats, making it almost impossible to load on our ipad. even worse, when/if it finally does load, the top half of the page is all video stories, forcing us to scroll down several scrolls to finally get to steve benen's blog posts, which are all equipped with extra large headlines and big pictures, practically filling up one ipad screen per item. not easy to peruse.

along with greg sargent at the washington post (whose extra-large comment sections, chock full of trolling, makes it interminably long to load), steve will now be relegated to the "bloggers we once read daily but now will only be able to read when we are at our desktop computers what is this 2004?" department.

disasters in the dakotas

1st it was the freak blizzard that hit south dakota, killings hundreds of thousands of cattle.

now it's a huge oil spill in a north dakota wheat field.
a farmer discovered a huge oil spill — several times bigger than the recent mayflower, ark., spill – nearly two weeks ago in north dakota. but because of federal government furloughs, we’re only just learning about it.- grist
why should we care about the dakotas' food?
there was one courageous south dakotan who cared about our nation's food and americans' access to it..

the disasters are too immense for the states to handle themselves. they need the governments help...and quick. senator mcgovern wouldn't call those farmers needing aid.."moochers"...senator mcgovern wouldn't call those needing snap benefits "moochers" like a current south dakotan politico.

if you haven't done so already, call your congresscritters and tell them to grow up and get the government going again. better yet, call senator thune's office and ask him if he has told those farmers affected by the shutdown and the disasters that "they are on their own."

congresscritters are frozen in d.c.

and thousands of south dakotans are truly frozen...and you probably haven't heard about it.
as many as 75,000 cattle have perished since the storm slammed the western part of the state thursday through saturday with snowfall that set records for the entire month of october in just three days, state and industry officials said.
... ranchers have no one to ask for help or reimbursement. that's because congress has yet to pass a new farm bill, which subsidizes agricultural producers.- nbcnews.com
of course, one of south dakota's senators is john thune (r), who apparently is more concerned about stopping americans from getting healthcare than he is for the welfare of his own constituents.

johnson was truly a legend and guiding force to generations of dartmouth golfers. but beyond all of his accomplishments, victories and contributions to collegiate golf, he will always be remembered and celebrated for his incredible humanness, personality and unquenchable spirit. he loved his players, his teams and dartmouth. his love for golf was boundless and his teachings revolutionary.

He Called the Police

911 Operator (OP): "911. Please state your emergency."

Driver (D): "I'm a substandard driver and I panic under pressure."

OP: "Being a typical tourist is not an emergency, sir."

D: "The thing is, I was driving and a bunch of bikers started weaving around me. Everyone else was letting them pass, but I have a Range Rover, so I just hit three of them and drove on."

OP: You hit three bicyclists? Commissioner Kelly will be proud of you! He's been saying we're under quota all year."

D: "Not bicyclists. Motorcyclists."

OP: "Oh. That might be different. You say you hit three of them?"

D: "Yes, and I want them arrested! Their friends are all chasing me now!"

OP: "So we can call it a motorcycle gang?"

D: "uh. Yeah. Yes, I think so. I'm being chased by a wild motorcycle gang just because I ran over three of them. I want them arrested!."

OP: "That should be no problem, sir. You say you panicked. Did you fear for your life?"

D: "Yes! And my wife and baby's."

OP: "Oh, good! Our best Long Island based, motorcycle-hating policemen will have no problem arresting them and not you. You don't won't in a profession where panic is a bad thing, do you?"

D: "I'm an investment banker."

OP: "Oh, good. I was afraid it might be something that required good judgement. Have a good day, sir."
