of why medicaid is so important.
as i looked at these pictures of the babies being evacuated, i had a depressing thought. what are the financial situations of these babies' parents? are they poor? do they have insurance? are they on medicaid? medicaid is a health programme that pays for medical services for those who cannot afford them. it is jointly funded by the federal and state governments. - the guardian

satellites are infrastructure too

they don't just magically appear up in the orbit. it takes financial investment. travel depends upon accurate forecasts. business depends upon accurate forecasts. lives depend upon accurate forecasts.
the united states is facing a year or more without crucial satellites that provide invaluable data for predicting storm tracks, a result of years of mismanagement, lack of financing and delays in launching replacements, according to several recent official reviews.

the looming gap in satellite coverage, which some experts view as almost certain within the next few years, could result in shaky forecasts about storms like hurricane sandy, which is expected to hit the east eoast early next week. - nytimes

One Lost Year And One Upcoming Election...

First, the lost year.

In September 2011, I lost my job at the print shop. To summarize a long boring story (leaving out some of the more unsavory parts): I was unemployed for six months, during which I moved from Richmond, Virginia to Hudson, New Hampshire, living with my parents for four months; I got a part-time job with a very large retail company in March 2012 in Nashua, next to Hudson, and moved to Nashua in May, mainly for a better shot at finding full-time work; After twelve frustrating months of trying and failing to find full-time work, I ended up blowing my stack one night at the retail place, telling one quite obnoxious customer to "get the f&$k out" of the store in front of at least fifteen witnesses, including my supervisor; the next morning, management pretty much told me to get the f&$k out (fair enough, I figured, though I wasn't happy about it); and four days later, I started driving a taxi in Nashua six nights a week, which I'm still doing and kind of like doing it. The hours are obscenely long, but it beats the hell out of retail. That, and the unpaid bills are starting to get paid again. I can't really complain.

So that's what I've been up to, in case anyone cared.

Now that that's out of the way...

There's another damn election coming up in less than two weeks. A presidential one at that. This one's easy as pie: I'm voting for Obama. That's been my plan since 2009.  George may not like it, and Heaven knows I don't want to get into another shouting match with a co-blogger around here -- the last time I wrote regularly for skippy, I ended up trading insults with Mahakal over the 9/11 attacks (my insults being more poisonous and far more mean-spirited), and that didn't sit well with anyone. Still, and I know I've said this all before...

It's like this. If you want to vote Democratic in November, go ahead. You want to vote Republican, go ahead. You want to vote Libertarian or some other third-party, go ahead. You want to write someone's name in, even your own, go ahead. You want to stay home, go ahead. It's your vote, and no one can tell you what you can do with it.

What you are going to end up with, however -- no matter how you vote -- is either Obama or Romney. You may not like that (I certainly don't), but, it is what it is. I called myself an independent voter for twenty years, starting when I was 18, through both my conservative and later progressive phases. But after some twenty years, I became a Democrat by default. I realized that no matter what I did or what I believed in, I was going to end up with a Republican or a Democrat, and frankly, I'm too damned poor to vote Republican.

If you're reading this, there's a good chance that you are, too. Say, a 99% chance, if you catch my drift.

Anyway, I'm gonna shut up now. I have to work tonight. I'll catch up with everyone later...

a hilarious comment over on greg sargent's plumline @ washpost:

dear governor romney,

it’s come to my attention that you have misrepresented me several times during the presidential campaign. i am writing to ask you to cease all such activity immediately.

you have claimed that i could add between $7 trillion and $8 trillion to the u.s. budget without increasing the deficit or raising taxes on someone other than the wealthy. i’m good, but not that good. i’ve searched my multi-millennial archives from algebra to quantum theory to zoological science and conclude i have never done anything remotely close to what you’re describing. ever. i can’t. it violates my basic principles as well as my professional reputation.

i also understand you claim i told you 12 million jobs over 4 years is the same as 7 million jobs over 10 years. with all due respect, how many times did you flunk third grade?

given the adverse publicity it’d cause at this sensitive time, i’d like to keep the lawyers out of it. just stop saying things about me that aren’t true, ok? if you’re not sure, run it by my staff beforehand.

i’ve worked hard for thousands of years to develop the trust humanity places in me and i’ll not have it fuzzified or tarnished by anyone who’ll die long before i will.

poll dancing

two nates, no waiting!

over @ the new republic, nate cohn sez obama had a slightly better weekend than the past week:

heading into the weekend, only yougov/economist and rand showed obama leading among likely voters. by this morning, those two methodologically distinct surveys were joined by four more traditional polls, including two surveys that showed romney leading late last week. in both instances, obama's gains exceeded a net-4 points over the last few days. perhaps most surprisingly, the abc/washington post poll showed obama gaining a point compared to their pre-debate survey, now holding a 49-46 lead. on the other hand, obama did not make any gains in gallup, even though the survey chopped off the initial few days following the first presidential debate. for democrats hoping for signs that romney's bounce was fading, the gallup numbers are a troubling sign. nonetheless, obama's leads in national surveys represented an improvement over last week.
but before you get too optimistic, nate silver over @ 538, pretty much says that anybody who isn't confused, is crazy:

there have been plenty of elections before when the outcome was highly uncertain down the stretch run or on election day itself. but i am not sure that there has been one where different types of polls pointed in opposite directions. anyone in my business who is not a bit terrified by this set of facts is either lying to himself — or he doesn’t know what he’s doing.
mr. silver points out that while many individual state polls give obama a slight advantage, national polling continues to either indicate a dead heat or a romney lead:

mr. romney, however, still held leads in two other tracking polls. the sunday edition of the rasmussen reports tracking poll put him up 2 percentage points, a 1-point gain from saturday, while he maintained a 2-point lead in the gallup national tracking poll of likely voters.

you should be able to see from this why the washington post’s poll is potentially important. with it, the case is clearer that mr. obama has recovered from his post-debate lows, although he has almost assuredly not made up all the ground he lost.
we'll see what happens if obama shows up for the townhall tomorrow.

can you tell me how to get, how to get to 30 aut six?

mitt romney’s mention of the beloved muppet isn’t the first time big bird’s name has popped up in an argument over public broadcasting funding. but this time, the mention went viral on facebook and twitter.

the phrase “big bird” was appearing 17,000 times every minute on twitter. at midnight, cnn reported that mentions of big bird on facebook were up an astronomical 800,000%.

facebook later said big bird was the fourth most-mentioned topic on facebook during the debate, getting more attention than topics like jobs, taxes, jim lehrer and obamacare.
the trade journal radio and television report said that ed markey, the massachusetts democrat, had a few choice words in august for romney that mentioned the yellow icon.

“a ryan-romney ticket buys admission to a budget match-up where big oil wins and big bird loses,” markey said. “congressman ryan’s budgets protect $40 billion in subsidies for the most profitable oil companies on the planet but would put an end to elmo’s world.”

as for the producers of sesame street, they chose to mostly stay out of the debate controversy.

tmz reported that sesame street released a statement, including the one fact the candidates (and most of america) agree on: everyone loves big bird.

“sesame workshop is a nonpartisan, nonprofit, educational organization. we do not comment on campaigns, but we’re happy we can all agree that everyone likes big bird.”

also on thursday, sesame workshop executive vice president sherrie westin told cnn that big bird isn’t going anywhere, since the workshop receives little pbs funding.
