matt taibbi does it again

he calls out on how the emperor romney has no clothes....and a whole lot of ill "borrowed" money
but what most voters don't know is the way mitt romney actually made his fortune: by borrowing vast sums of money that other people were forced to pay back. this is the plain, stark reality that has somehow eluded america's top political journalists for two consecutive presidential campaigns: mitt romney is one of the greatest and most irresponsible debt creators of all time. in the past few decades, in fact, romney has piled more debt onto more unsuspecting companies, written more gigantic checks that other people have to cover, than perhaps all but a handful of people on planet earth. - matt taibbi at rolling stone

environmental news stories sunday

for those pesky little stories that you won't be hearing on the sunday news talking head shows...that seem to invite the same inside washington d.c. peeps over...and over...and over again.

can we rely on our power grid? - as the eastern united states struggles to recover from yet another weather shock, energy officials are acknowledging climate change as a force that finally has to be reckoned with — even as concern grows over other threats that can set off catastrophic blackouts - asbury park press

what was behind mysterious collapse of the mayan empire? - scientists have found that drought played a key role in the decline of mayan empire, but the mayans appear to have exacerbated the problem by cutting down the jungle canopy to make way for cities and crops

floating housing (and golf courses) for post-climate change island paradises. - a new resort development in the maldives (currently sitting five feet above sea level) will be ready if the country starts to go underwater – the whole thing is already floating - fast company

ahead of isaac's rainfall, florida tries to halt potential toxic spill. - along with fretting over whether Isaac's winds and flooding will wreck homes and businesses and roads, here's another worry for tampa bay residents: toxic waste overflowing from a long-abandoned florida fertilizer plant - tampa bay times

california utility slammed for 'meaningless' changes. - pacific gas and electric co. made "meaningless" pledges following the san bruno pipeline disaster while doing nothing to change its corporate emphasis on maximizing profit over safety, a top california utility safety official alleges in an extraordinarily harsh regulatory filing - sfgate

severe summer drought recalls damaging dust bowl days. - over the past six weeks, the u.s. department of agriculture has designated 1,821 counties in 35 states as disaster areas, at least 1,692 of them due to drought. the agency is calling it the worst drought in more than 50 years - mcclatchy

contaminated ink implicated in tattoo infections. - a rash of reports this week from the new england journal of medicine, the u.s. centers for disease control and prevention and the u.s. food and drug administration point to contaminated inks as the source of icky-sounding, potentially dangerous skin infections among people with tattoos - wapo

burma floods leave 85,000 homeless in Irrawaddy delta. - the burmese government has said that 85,000 people have been driven from their homes by heavy flooding. the irrawaddy delta - where 130,000 people died in a cyclone in 2008 - has been worst affected - bbc

big chem, big harm? - new research is demonstrating that some common chemicals all around us may be even more harmful than previously thought. yet the evidence is growing that these are significant threats of a kind from which washington continually fails to protect americans - nytimes

the crackpot caucus. the tutorial in 8th grade biology that republicans got after one of their members of congress went public with something from the wackosphere was instructive, and not just because it offered female anatomy lessons to those who get their science from the bible - nytimes

is it too late to defuse the danger of megafires? - forests in the southwest have become a fuel stockpile. a century of u.s. forest service policy of quashing all fires has allowed forests to become overgrown, and now a warming climate is making the problem worse. scientists are trying to defuse these green time bombs. is it too late? - all things considered

black licorice recalled for containing lead - grist

mitt romney: i'm not a birther but i play one on tv

mitt romney went there:

mitt romney made a birth certificate joke today, prompting president obama's campaign to accuse him of lining up with the so-called "birther" movement.

during an appearance in his native michigan today, romney said: "no one has ever asked to see my birth certificate -- they know that this was the place we were born and raised."

what was it that romney just said to obama? oh yeah: "take your campaign of division and anger and hate back to chicago!"

where do you begin to express the outrage

of the hate and misogyny of the republicans? really...where do you begin?

legitimate rape? what the hell is that? oh, yeah...that's right. women are hysterical and will lie and call it "rape" just, well...just because. and marital rape, well...that isn't "rape" either. that shouldn't be criminalized. that's just a man getting what he deserves from his "property", oh, i mean wife.

a woman who wants to practice personal responsibility by using birth control is, well, called a "slut" because according to the gop, a woman shouldn't actually enjoy the act of love making and plan to engage in it responsibly.

forget romneyhood' "magic underwear," according to the gop woman have this "magic natural substance" in their private parts that protects women from becoming pregnant if they are raped...or lie about being raped. '

if a woman gets pregnant, she isn't intelligent enough to decide what to do with her body, her future. according to the gop, she should be joyous that she is a human broodmare for men dictating her life. apparently life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness shouldn't apply to woman...or blacks...or latinos (or any brown skinned person the gop likes to refer to as "illegals." oh, wait...they want to sterilize those people because the gop thinks they are having too many babies.)

what if men were forced to have a probe thrust up into their bodies against their will, i'm sure there would be laws against such action...but when it happens to women (transvaginal probe) it's "for their own good."

men deserve to get more pay than women for doing the same job according to the gop because, well, they are men. they shouldn't be "emasculated" by some "smart a** b****h"

really. wtf? really.

i am just speechless with disbelief over the c**p these creeps are spewing out without media pushback to their misogyny.

over the past weekend, three kangaroos at the hochwildschutzpark hunsrück near frankfurt chose the second option. with the help of their fellow animal park residents, who had already made (supposedly) coincidental escape hatches in various zoo enclosures, the kangaroos — skippy, jack, and mick — made a hop for it. as of monday, two of them had been caught, but one has managed to evade capture. zoo officials stressed that skippy, or whichever one it is, is friendly and poses no danger to the public. still, there is no telling what he might do if you try to take his seat in the qantas first class lounge.

roos on the loose

go comrades! hop free!

officials from an animal park in frankfurt, germany, are still in pursuit of a daring kangaroo which, along with two others, was able to slip through the facility's dual-perimeters over the weekend thanks to a some unlikely interspecies collaboration.
according to michael hoffmann, deputy head of the hochwildschutzpark hunsrück park, the kangaroos managed to escape their confines by crawling through a hole an unwitting fox had dug at the base of the fenced-in enclosure. with that hurdle passed, the brazen trio caught another lucky break in their hop towards freedom -- finding a hole in the park's exterior wall, left behind by a wild boar, that was big enough for the kangaroos to pass. - treehopper...i mean treehugger

environmental news stories sunday

for those pesky little stories that you probably didn't hear on the talking head shows this morning...and definitely not broadcast by nbc.

clearing the air: that air you're breathing may be slowly killing you. - utah has one of the worst air pollution problems in the country and the impacts are startling: the pollution is killing people. It is sending families and individuals to hospital emergency rooms. It is contributing to strokes and heart attacks. bothyoung and old suffer - salt lake deseret news

london 2012: olympic games 'greenest ever.'- london 2012 has been the greenest olympics ever, the commission set up to monitor the environmental impact of the Games has announced. - bbc

the terrible legacy of agent orange. - last week, 40 years after the war ended, the us began a programme to try to decontaminate the worst-affected parts of the country, but even if the belated action grows into something far larger, it can never deal with the dreadful legacy of agent orange - the independent

From (un)Happy, texas - where the water ran out. - in the texas panhandle town of happy, main street is entirely abandoned, save for the happy state bank. locals told me it’s been that way for decades, ever since they “ran out of water.” more accurately, the farmers irrigated so much the aquifer level fell below a level affordable enough to pump. - marketplace

drought in colorado and nationally will lead to higher food prices. - coming soon to a grocery store near you: higher prices. pervasive drought in colorado and much of the rest of the nation means more than just brown lawns and dried-up gardens. crops are stunted, and prices are rising - denver post

drought taps out some water wells around St. Louis. - for months, farmers have been forced to drill deeper wells to water parched crops and feed livestock. but in recent weeks, homeowners across the state have reported that they can't perform basic tasks such as doing laundry or washing dishes, let alone even think about watering their flower beds - st louis dispatch

In texas, water may be free, but it's not forever. - since there's not a whole lot of water falling from the sky, much of the farm belt is looking underground to local aquifers. but here's the thing about that: a new study in the journal "nature" says 20 percent of the world's aquifers are being over-exploited, including those in texas - marketplace

u.s. drought exposes “hydro-illogical” water management. - the historic drought withering much of the united states this summer has revealed a need for strategies to better manage water supplies that could remain under severe pressure both this year and in the longer term - ips

investigator: chevron's richmond refinery fire 'near disaster' for workers; pipe safety in question. - more than a dozen workers were nearly killed when the vapor cloud that sparked monday's massive chevron refinery fire engulfed them as they worked on a leaky, four-decades-old pipe that the oil giant had not replaced during a round of maintenance last year, federal investigators said Saturday - contra costa times

unusual heat points to a long-term problem. - mayor michael bloomberg deserves to be supported in his efforts to promote the use of solar power. so does borough rresident james molinaro in his bid to bring wind power to Staten island. global warming isn’t science fiction; it’s science fact - staten island advance

Dear President Obama

I have voted for the Democratic candidate for President every year that I could vote up to and including 2008. I voted straight Democratic in 2010.  I will vote Democratic in every race this year except the Presidency because I do not believe you are really a Democrat.

Let's look at the facts.  Your promise to end the Bush tax cuts required exactly 0 Republican votes and yet you signed legislation to extend them.

Rep. Ryan is the most despicable Republican alive because he wants to starve grandmothers by cutting Social Security and Medicare.  Just like you proposed.  Repeatedly.

You will not have my vote this November.  The fault lies with you.  I cannot in good conscience support you again.  I will not vote for Romney either.  His policies and yours are extremely hard to differentiate and that is the problem.

Please find your  conscience and your soul when you win re-election.  As you are a wholly owned subisdiary of Goldman Sachs I do not believe you can.

rip bill rafferty

we just got the very sad news that one of skippy's old friends from the comedy days, bill rafferty, passed away this morning.

tho skippy knew bill from coming up thru the comedy trenches in the late 70's san francisco comedy scene, most of america knew bill as one of the erstwhile hosts of real people, part of the ur-reality genre that began to invade television in the 80's.

bill went on to host many one-offs of game shows, including blockbuster and the revamped card sharks.

and before real people, bill (along with robin williams, another sf comedy staple from skippy's early days) was one of george schlatter's choices for the revamped (and pretty bad) version of laugh-in.

bill made a few appearances in various tv shows, including nash bridges, which filmed in the san francisco bay area, where bill chose to live. most recently he was the host of retired and wired, which looked at senior living with (or against?) technology.

bill was a staunch conservative, and had many a facebook debate w/skippy in the past few months. we had heard that he was sick recently, but had also heard he was out of the woods. apparently, not far enough out of the woods.

bill was a gracious and generous man, was well as supremely talented and quite funny. he always had nothing but great things to say about skippy when they played the coffee gallery and the other cafe in the old days, and was always great fun to perform with. bill also never let his television success go to his head, and was always ready to pal around with his old buddies, even after becoming a tv reality star.

we are very very sad to hear of his passing, and comedy is just a little bit less humorous tonight.

rest in peace, bill rafferty.
