susan g. komen foundation doesn't care about women's health
but, no. they're playing politics with women's health.
...komen's new vice president, karen handel, had run for governor of georgia in 2010 on an aggressively anti-abortion and anti-planned parenthood platform and was endorsed by sarah palin because of her opposition to reproductive choice. handel wrote in her campaign blog that she "do[es] not support the mission of planned parenthood."
"during my time as chairman of fulton county, there were federal and state pass-through grants that were awarded to planned parenthood for breast and cervical cancer screening, as well as a 'healthy babies initiative,'" handel wrote. "since grants like these are from the state i'll eliminate them as your next governor." she also wrote that she opposes stem cell research and supports crisis pregnancy centers, which are unregulated, christian-run operations whose main mission is to convince pregnant women not to have abortions.
after handel lost the gubernatorial primary, susan g. komen for the cure named her to be its senior vice president in april 2011. - huffpo
but this move shouldn't really surprise us. people associated with the "pink money machine" have shown their disdain before. the founder of the organization, nancy brinker, was the white house chief of protocol who turned the obama's away from the blair house when they were moving to washington. the obamas were not given the usual treatment for incoming president-elects. they were shown the door.
now...the door is being shut on women.
one of my favorite writers, barbara ehrenreich puts it so well...
to some extent, pink-ribbon culture has replaced feminism as a focus of female identity and solidarity. when a corporation wants to signal that it’s “woman friendly,” what does it do? it stamps a pink ribbon on its widget and proclaims that some miniscule portion of the profits will go to breast cancer research. i’ve even seen a bottle of shiraz called “hope” with a pink ribbon on its label, but no information, alas, on how much you have to drink to achieve the promised effect - salonwell...this pink ribbon culture....the pink money making machine can go to, well, somewhere where the sun don't shine.
next time someone comes around wanting you to sponsor them in a susan g. komen walk-a-thon or some such money making endeavour....tell them you will donate directly to planned parenthood in thier name. planned parenthood actually cares about women and their health...and they don't have to pay to make any pink ribbon labeled chinese made c**p.

google goes all creepy
google will soon know far more about who you are and what you do on the web.
the web giant announced tuesday that it plans to follow the activities of users across nearly all of its ubiquitous sites, including youtube, gmail and its leading search engine.
google has already been collecting some of this information. but for the first time, it is combining data across its web sites to stitch together a fuller portrait of users. consumers won’t be able to opt out of the changes, which take effect march 1. - wapo

child's cat murdered..."liberal" written on side
the campaign manager of arkansas democratic congressional candidate ken aden arrived home last night to find his child’s pet cat murdered on the front porch with the word “liberal” scrawled across its lifeless body. - think progress and blue arkansas

“it is one thing to engage in civil political discourse, and for republicans and democrats to disagree with each other, which is an expected part of the political process. taking it to this level is beyond unacceptable,” aden said.- campaign website of ken aden

...King asked Gingrich to respond to allegations by his ex-wife that in 1999, Gingrich asked her to have an open marriage with him.
"Would you like to take some time to respond to that?" asked King.
"No, but I will," responded Gingrich, receiving loud, sustained applause from the audience.
"I think the destructive, vicious, negative nature of much of the news media makes it harder to govern this country, harder to attract decent people to run for public office. And I am appalled that you would begin a presidential debate on a topic like that," he said...

and stop the presses, er, we mean, let the presses start: keith olbermann will host current's coverage of the new hampshire primary:
memo reveals tension over gop primary
"he told us he will do upcoming special election coverage," a current spokesperson told [the hollywood reporter] on sunday. "we certainly hope he does. that was our intention all along."
olbermann will have complete creative and editorial control. but it's unclear exactly what that coverage will look like; whether olbermann will do a special edition of countdown with his own panel of guests or lead the network's politically direct election specials, which have featured cenk uygur, jennifer granholm and network co-founder al gore.
the timing of the détente means politically direct will continue as planned on tuesday.

password breach
here's my tip for creating secure password that is easy to remember: pick a title from a book or box or something that is always on your desk and use that as the passwords. make it all lower case except for the third and fourth characters and substitute a letter for a number in the first i, l, or o. Seems complicated but is easy once you try. say the book "Tom Sawyer" is on your desk and is a permanent fixture. it might be one of a dozen books on your desk. so now your password is "t0MSawyer" (that second character is a zero). i don't like that it is only nine characters, but then i always go for fifteen or more characters. for many years i used UN1XthecOmpletereference, but then i worked in computer security some years ago and learned a lot about password cracking. my current password is above fifteen characters and has case changes and number substitutions and some non-alphanumeric characters.
password cracking can be done in a number of ways, but a dictionary-based cracker is easily defeated by my suggestion. you can't defeat a brute force cracker that generates every character and number combination in the world, but if you have a complex password, it will take a brute force cracker too long to crack your password, making it worthless to hackers to try.

this is why gop wants to defund pbs
mainstream news outlets spent a lot of time in 2011 covering the record-breaking year for extreme weather in the u.s. but only a few of them spent much time exploring the link between those events and global warming.
so pbs deserves a special mention for a segment that aired last week looking at how global warming is influencing extreme weather events. as jeff masters, co-founder of the weather underground, explained in the piece: "they all tend to get increased when you have this extra energy in the atmosphere. I call it being on steroids ... for the atmosphere." - grist
