rip charlie callas
a 1982 article in the tmes said callas "will strut, stroll, fall down or drape himself over anything handy to get laughs during his routines."
"somebody once told me, 'You look like a cartoon that somebody just drew,' " callas recalled in a 1991 interview with new york's newsday. "and that's what I am, a cartoon come to wreak havoc, like a wild kid. i'm silly."
the whippet-thin callas, whose visually oriented brand of humor included celebrity impressions, was a regular guest on tv variety and talk shows in the 1960s and '70s, including "the merv griffin show," johnny carson's "tonight show" and the "dean martin celebrity roasts."

dorothy surrendered to the big bad wicked witch
but...why? apparently because of friends in "high places."
according to informed sources, the ceos of whole foods (wfm) and stonyfield are personal friends of former iowa governor, now usda secretary, tom vilsack, and in fact made financial contributions to vilsack's previous electoral campaigns. vilsack was hailed as "governor of the year" in 2001 by the biotechnology industry organization, and traveled in a monsanto corporate jet on the campaign trail. perhaps even more fundamental to organic inc.'s abject surrender is the fact that the organic elite has become more and more isolated from the concerns and passions of organic consumers and locavores. the organic inc. ceos are tired of activist pressure, boycotts, and petitions. several of them have told me this to my face. they apparently believe that the battle against gmos has been lost, and that it's time to reach for the consolation prize. the consolation prize they seek is a so-called "coexistence" between the biotech behemoth and the organic community that will lull the public to sleep and greenwash the unpleasant fact that monsanto's unlabeled and unregulated genetically engineered crops are now spreading their toxic genes on 1/3 of u.s. (and 1/10 of global) crop land. - organic consumers association
there can be no such thing as "coexistence" with a reckless industry that undermines public health, destroys biodiversity, damages the environment, tortures and poisons animals, destabilizes the climate, and economically devastates the world's 1.5 billion seed-saving small farmers. there is no such thing as coexistence between gmos and organics in the european union. why? because in the eu there are almost no gmo crops under cultivation, nor gm consumer food products on supermarket shelves. and why is this? because under eu law, all foods containing gmos or gmo ingredients must be labeled.- organic consumers association

this financial hell was avoidable
the 2008 financial crisis was an “avoidable” disaster caused by widespread failures in government regulation, corporate mismanagement and heedless risk-taking by wall street, according to the conclusions of a federal inquiry.
...“the greatest tragedy would be to accept the refrain that no one could have seen this coming and thus nothing could have been done,” the panel wrote in the report’s conclusions, which were read by the new york times. “if we accept this notion, it will happen again.” - nytimes

former bear stearns mortgage executives who now run mortgage divisions of goldman sachs, bank of america, and ally financial have been accused of cheating and defrauding investors through the mortgage securities they created and sold while at bear. according to e-mails and internal audits, jpmorgan had known about this fraud since the spring of 2008, but hid it from the public eye through legal maneuvering. last week a lawsuit filed in 2008 by mortgage insurer ambac assurance corp against bear stearns and jpmorgan was unsealed. the lawsuit's supporting e-mails, going back as far as 2005, highlight bear traders telling their superiors they were selling investors like ambac a "sack of shit."
news of internal whistleblowers coming forward from bear's mortgage servicing division, emc, was first reported by the atlantic in may of last year. ex-emc analysts admitted they were sometimes told to falsify loan-level performance data provided to the ratings agencies who blessed bear's billion-dollar deals. but according to depositions and documents in the ambac lawsuit, bear's misdeeds went even deeper. they say senior traders under tom marano, who was a senior managing director and global head of mortgages for bear and is now ceo of ally's mortgage operations, were pocketing cash that should have gone to securities holders after Bear had already sold them bonds and moved the loans off its books.- the atlantic

The Right Man for the Job?
Jeffrey Immelt, CEO of General Electric, is leading the Jobs Initiative for the Obama White House. He has been at GE for about a decade now, so let's see how he has done.
If you look at the GE Annual Reports, you can see the staff growth under Immelt. 2000 Annual Report (PDF; the last one with "Neutron Jack" as head of the company), GE had 131,000 U.S.-based employees and 92,000 non-domestic ones.
For the 2009 Annual Report (also PDF), there are 134,000 U.S.-based employees and 154,000 non-US ones.
So the man charged with solving the greatest level of U.S. unemployment since July of 1983 is someone who has added jobs domestically for his own firm at the rate of 0.25% (just to be clear:0.0025) per year.
Or, to put it another way, a man whose firm has added less than one domestic job for every twenty added elsewhere.
One of the reasons that is perpetually given for the high level of unemployment is a poor fit of the "skill set" required to do the job. It's a pity the Obama Administration doesn't follow the lead of the private sector.

exit stage left
i admit. i have a big crush on keith o.
handsome. intelligent. witty. well read. natty dresser. leans to the left. my kind of man. usually when i see mention of keith, my heart skips a beat, but, alas, last night when reading my twitter feed, the mentions of keith brought about my heart to sink. low.
as i wait to have the countdown episode from last night to download onto itunes, i'm taking a look at some of the articles that are out about his announcement and it's making my heart sink even further.
yeah, it's been a big day at msnbc...at least it's been a big 15 minutes...i know very little about it, all i know is that it was between keith and the company and it didn't involve any of the rest of us and he was really gracious and nice when he left. - businessinsider.com
bill carter just told anderson cooper that part of whatever deal they struck will likely keep olbermann of tv "maybe not for two years" but for an extended period of time. - businessinsider.com
the virtual war in which olbermann was engaged with his bosses at msnbc and nbc news could not have been something that comcast wanted a part of. and while thus far there is no specific evidence that comcast had a direct hand in this development there no almost no question that comcast provided some sort of support to nbc to end olbermann’s contract, an action that jeff zucker might not have supported. - mediaite
whether or not the recent comcast-nbc merger has anything to do with it, we may never know. but, the timing does seem, well, a little too "conveeeeeeeeeenient" for the comcastic company and way too inconvenient for viewers who appreciated a tall, dark and handsome american who called out to the "emperors" that they had no clothes.
speaking truth to power. more often than not, the "power" wins.
so, keith. so long for now (i'm hoping that it is not goodbye)...and good luck.

bad news for modern man
the host, who has had a stormy relationship with the management of the network for some time, especially since he was suspended for two days last november, came to an agreement with nbc’s corporate management late this week to settle his contract and step down.
in a closing statement on his show, mr. olbermann said simply that it would be the last edition of the program. he offered no explanation other than on occasion, the show had become too much for him.
...
in a statement, msnbc said : “msnbc and keith olbermann have ended their contract. the last broadcast of ‘countdown with keith olbermann’ will be this evening. msnbc thanks Keith for his integral role in msnbc’s success and we wish him well in his future endeavors.”

goldman sachs, the great vampire squid of the american financial industry
goldman sachs has decided to block u.s. investors from getting in on its big investment in facebook. the decision comes after a wave of media attention when goldman invested $450 million in facebook, a privately held company, as reported by our sister blog money & company.
excluding american investors will keep goldman and facebook from having to fall in line with some u.s. securities laws -- such as having to report certain financial information when a cap of more than 500 u.s. investors is broken so that investors can have an idea of the risk they face in the stock. - latimes

banks want to "take back" capitol hill
it's time for america's banks to turn around the conversation about the financial system and retake their position as enablers of economic recovery.we have already seen a little of the future the banks want for us...what do they want next, debtors prisons?
that's the message richard davis, the chairman, president and ceo of u.s. bank, brought to santa barbara on jan. 13.
during an interview with the business times just a few hours before a major speech to the california bankers association, davis said it's time for the nation's bankers to "take back the hill" and reshape the political dialogue about banking and the future of the economy.
davis, named "banker of the year" by the trade publication american banker, leads the fifth-largest banking enterprise in the country, and one of the healthiest. In addition to his talk at the bankers’ group, he was in santa barbara to open a new private wealth management operation on state street.
...but he also meant banks need to literally take back capitol hill, where bankers have faced tough questions about their role in the near-collapse of the nation's economy. in part, he said, smaller community banks, medium-sized banks and large banks such as u.s. bank must speak with one voice on key issues. - pacific coast business times

update on the queensland flooding
twelve people are confirmed dead, with one other possible. the qld. police commissioner stated that they expect that to rise. the loss of animals, including livestock and pets, is unknown but very high. the fed. government has said that the expect that cost of this disaster to be at least 1% of australia’s gdp for the next year, and that prices of food and commodities globally will rise significantly. qld. was the largest exporter of thermal and coking coal, and several mines are completely flooded. coking coal is used primarily these days to manufacture steel worldwide, so steel prices are going to rise.
a large area of qld. is without power as utilities were forced to shutdown supply to flood areas. several sewerage & treatment plants have been flooded, and much of the flood water has been contaminated, which has then contaminated catchment areas, dam’s and river systems. so clean drinking water is a big problem ironically. some outbreaks of gastro problems have been reported primarily caused by e. coli. outbreaks of dengi & ross river fever are expected also. emergency hospitals and medical centers have been setup where possible near affected areas, and the army medical corps have setup at least one rapid deployment field hospital with staff experienced in tropical disease control.
as well as sanitation issues, and dealing with hundreds of annoyed critters like red-bellied black snakes and assorted spiders looking for a dry place, a bull shark was spotted swimming up the main street of goodna, a suburb of ipswitch. though the street was under 6m of water at the time.![]()

susie quotes rfk jr.
Neither Beck, Hannity nor Savage not the hate merchants at Fox News and talk radio can claim to have invented their genre. Toxic right-wing vitriol so dominated the public airwaves from the McCarthy era until 1963 that President Kennedy, that year, launched a citizen’s campaign to enforce the Fairness Doctrine, which required accuracy and balance in the broadcast media. Students, civic and religious groups filed more than 500 complaints against right-wing extremists and hate-mongering commentators before the FCC.
go read the whole thing. then consider sending some complaints to the FCC yourself. demand a return to the fairness doctrine.
