First thing - I never thought Obama was really a liberal. His record was, marginally, left of center but hardly liberal. He was my 3rd choice going into the caucus but it was obvious from the excitement he generated - we had 150 ballots cast in my precinct when normal for a prez year is about 30 - made him the obvious choice.

Second, the middle class abandoned the Dems for Nixon's racism and Reagan's 'free money'. Given that reality, the Dems were an easy target for the big money elite. The result is a two party system with the Dems taking the Republican positions and the Republican's seeing how far whacked out they can be and still get enough of the morans to vote for them while they jam it up their ass.
