watch tv, listen to liars
curious about the safety of nuclear energy in the united states, after seeing so many apologists for nuclar power on television talking about how there have only been three accidents ever (three mile island, chernobyl, and fukushima), i took a little look on the internet tubes to see if that was so.
it isn't. it took me sconds to find this.
don't worry. not a lot of people have died. and they're dead now, so don't worry. also, take note of the part about borated water eating into the sides of containment vessels. i know someone who works in a nuclear power plant in nj. he says all containment vessels everywhere are in a state of deterioration and it takes constant vigilance to maintain them.

Thanks, Mo. Speaking as Skippy, it's really great when someone notices my skiptacular efforts. It's good to get credit when it's due to me, Skippy.
I also want to add that we need more comments from astute readers like Mo. Mo really got the most out of that posting and seems to have paid very close attention to every detail. I, Skippy, appreciate that immensely.
This just gets worse and worse. I don't know how to process what's happening in Japan anymore, it's that fucked up...
Just saw Charlie Rose with the uber-arrogant nuclear apologist William Tucker. He made it a point to talk about the many indirect deaths from coal pollution while touting the "zero deaths" number from TMI and omitting the cancers that probably resulted from the releases of radiation there. Double standard anyone?
The apologists have been all over TV saying "Nobody died at TMI and nobody died at Chernobyl".
People didn't die immediately and directly, but the increases in cancer rates are established. Here are two articles on the cancer increases caused by Chernobyl. It took me eight seconds to find them.

By the way, thyroid cancer takes a VERY long time to become apparent. When I had my thyroid removed last year due to cancer, I was told that it was probably caused by exposure to radiation when I was a child. I haven't been a child for over 30 years. Chernobyl took place 25 years ago.

Finally someone mentions Hanford.. though there was a fatality there in the 70's that's not on wikipedia or ever in the papers (a fellow I know worked there at the time, there was an accident & a contaminated man died and they cemented in the building).
And someone in the press should check with the French about consequences of Chernobyl's radiation fallout.

Great post. Great find.
It has always seemed to me we keep getting wool pulled over our eyes about nuclear power and the whole industry. This seems to rather prove it further, I think.
Secondly, that's what I've been writing, too, about this whole blow up in Japan:

The government keeps saying "all is well! all is well!" like Kevin Bacon at the end of "Animal House".
I don't buy it.
And it's far from over.
Keep up the great work.
