Hell, This One's Easy...

Ex-Republican John Cole's take on the GOP having gotten a lot dumber over the last five to seven years:

...I’m sure many of you will want to say “They were always this dumb.” They just weren’t though. It’s been a noticeable shift in both stupidity and meanness. Somehow or another they’ve managed to take the old stupid/evil continuum and figured out how to get stupider and more evil.

Cole is partly right. The Republican party, as a whole, has probably never been anywhere near as mean and brainless as it currently is. The thing is, it's had a small but enduring mean-and-brainless bloc for decades, going back at least as far as Barry Goldwater's 1964 presidential run. And unfortunately, this is the one bloc within the GOP that has been growing in recent years -- all the rational and decent people have either left the party, are leaving it, or have been marginalized.

That's one of the key differences between Democrats and Republicans these days. I'm pretty sure the Democrats have as many or almost as many lunatics as the Republicans do. But the Democrats will try to keep their lunatics on as short a leash as possible -- the Republicans have gone and let their lunatics take over the damn asylum...

Before Goldwater there was McCarthy and the John Birchers.

And McCarthy basically got run out of the party by the moderate Republicans, and the John Birchers were regularly laughed at and ignored by mainstream Republicans. But that was then. This is now. Michelle Bachman makes McCarthy look like Dennis Kucinich on the "crazy and dumb" scale, yo.
