republican "holds" america hostage

until his demands for earmarks are granted. i thought rethuglicans hated earmarks... i thought rethuglicans wanted up or down votes on nominations...

sen. richard shelby (r-al) has put an extraordinary "blanket hold" on at least 70 nominations president obama has sent to the senate, according to multiple reports this evening. the hold means no nominations can move forward unless senate democrats can secure a 60-member cloture vote to break it, or until shelby lifts the hold.

..according to the report, shelby is holding obama's nominees hostage until a pair of lucrative programs that would send billions in taxpayer dollars to his home state get back on track. - tpm
and they aren't the usual "run of the mill" nominees, these positions that are not being filled, due to a senator's pork addiction, deal with "homeland" security.

democrats are accusing republicans of threatening natl. security by blocking votes on nominees to be the top intelligence officers at the state department and the department of homeland security as well as the number three civilian at the pentagon. - the note

Republicans do whatever benefits them the most at any given time -- that's how John McCain keeps getting re-elected, even though his political career should have ended with the S&L scandal. Not that Democrats are a hell of a lot better. It's just that unlike the Dems, the Republicans have no shame or sense of decency whatsoever...

No, the question we should be asking is why we live in such a "democracy" that one Senator would have the power to do what he is doing? (or, for that matter, why 1/3 of the California legislature can stop a budget being passed or a host of other undemocratic features of our "democracy")

Please note that Shelby is holding up this vote so that one of the earmarks will give jobs to France's Airbus... As opposed to the American company, Boeing.

Sen. Shelby's noble effort to Keep America Safe is not about an earmark, but a vital defense appropriation which will allow "our" bombers to continue flying across the world to kill, maim & destroy, while letting "our" brave, noble, Death-from-Above Pilot-Warriors return to the bosoms of their families in time for dinner.

John McCain? Frat Boy, nearly flunked out of Annapolis, blew up four jet aircraft - including his own - before even getting off the deck of the aircraft carrier, spent less time 'in-country' before getting its incompetent ass shot down dropping bombs on civilians from ten thousand feet than I and my compatriots spent in a single patrol, sold-out his fellow POWs receiving special treatment as the son of a career naval officer John McCain? This program is designed by the idiots left from the Reagan regime that rebuilt five (5) battleships that the Japanese proved conclusively in Dec 1941 were easily sunk by airplanes built
for 1/400,000th of the cost. So some freaking admiral can pretend that that big bow in front of him is his boyfriend?

Or maybe it was those career retired admirals that thought up the supersubmarines that George the Genius let his drunk ol' Texas buddies play surface, surface with and killed some poor damn Japanese fishermen. The officer in charge was not hung? Who builds a damn submarine that Cannot Detect a Japanese Fishing Boat Directly Over It?

Nah, probably one of the experts on warfare who never saw a damn tank totally destroyed by a B40 rocket in the Vietnam war. Yeah, tanks are sexy, yeah, Hitler almost won a war with them.

Seriously we need an honest person in the government who can actually think and realize this is totally a waste of money, resources and labor.

Hell, we could let the entire state of Alabama not pay any taxes if we simply cut out all of the fake military crap that they turn out. We could lay off the workers with full pay and benefits for life to not even think of building these ridiculous obsolete pieces of garbage and show a huge savings.

Think, please, think. I know you love watching those fake military propaganda shows on the Discovery Channel, but this is beyond stupid.

Anon, attempt at parody there. Note quotes around "our." And a couple of other indicators.

As someone who does watch mil-porn, I like to interpret it as a demonstration of how the military, etc. complex is screwing things up, fighting the last war, & so on.
