the creep factor

brilliant @ breakfast echos our sentiments about the whole edwards debacle:

what bothers me most about l'affaire edwards, and what sticks in my craw most, is how john edwards bounded into a breakout session at yearly kos 2007 and the first words out of his mouth were "i just talked to elizabeth, and she's doing great" -- and the room erupted in cheers and applause. and he knew then it was a sham. and then i think about elizabeth edwards, standing on the stair landing in my house, talking about "john's vision for a better america" -- the vision that at that time neither barack obama nor hillary clinton was addressing, and i think "she knew even then, and she continued to campaign for him." and then i'm tempted to feel betrayed by her too, until i remember further how fast she was talking, as if she was in some kind of a race -- a race against time, a race against her illness, a race against the reckoning of the wreckage of her marriage that she knew she would inevitably have to face.

For some reason, I keep thinking about them losing a son in an auto accident in the 90s. Of course, I have no idea what that feels like -- I don't even have children. But I do know that losing a child can do strange things to people. I've seen it. And I can't help wondering if that has something to do with John Edwards' reprehensible behavior.

As for Elizabeth Edwards, life has just been cruel to her...

I don't give a rat's ass about John Edwards's affairs, but running for president you aren't going to keep that a secret and starting off by lying to your constituents makes you a bad, bad candidate who deserves to be driven out of politics.

And for the record, I don't care where Bill Clinton put his penis either, but he fucked up by lying about it too. In public, to the American people.

One thing I can say about Barack Obama, maybe it has more to do with what Michelle would do to him if he fucks up, but he isn't someone I think is likely to either have stupid affairs or try to conceal them by lying.

I also blame the press. That it took the fucking Enquirer for this to emerge tells me more about our national press than I want to know. The democrats should have also taken him out. It's not that I give a damn about what he was up to -- I think many of the best leaders were shitty human beings and I'd gladly go back to the days when we never knew but it's that in this day in age you know better. It's a no-brainer political career killer. Killing tens of thousands in war you lied about is okay, diddling some bimbo outside of your marriage is not.
