maine...maine...maine...

why their voters think that denying some americans the same rights as others is ok...is beyond this former new englander's belief.
in a stinging setback for the national gay-rights movement, maine voters narrowly decided to repeal the state’s new law allowing same-sex marriage.

the maine vote was particularly discouraging for gay-rights groups because it took place in new england, the region that has been the most open to same-sex marriage, and because opponents of the repeal had far outspent backers. - nytimes
might i remind those so-called religious zealots in maine that if they believe that being gay is an abomination (leviticus 20:13) they must also believe that eating shellfish (i.e., maine's top export - lobster) is an abomination. (leviticus 11:9 - 12) or are some parts of leviticus more delicious in a butter sauce?

I didn't like it either, Jill. Granted, I've talked a lot of smack about gay marriage here. But this issue came to a vote in Virginia three years ago, and I voted in favor of gay marriage -- and the next time it comes up, I'll vote in favor of it again. I have my reasons for talking smack about it. But I leave my mixed feelings about it at the door to my polling place, because I know voting in favor of gay marriage is the right thing. (Maybe I should do a better job of pointing that out from now on, come to think of it.)

The thing is, this has come down to a popular vote in thirty-one states so far, and every time, gay marriage has been rejected by a majority of voters. The good news is, the vote in Maine was very close. It seems that every time this issue comes to a vote, the margin of victory for the anti-gay marriage side gets a little smaller.

Give it time. There's really no other choice at this point. There will be more elections, there will be more losses, and there will be even smaller margins of victory for the other side. Homophobia is destructive, not constructive. Eventually, it'll defeat itself...

Washington's R-71 ('Everything but Marriage' rights) is winning by a slim margin 51% to 49% as of this post. The rednecks in Eastern WA voted it down as did the open mouthers out in Pierce Co. (home of Tacoma)

But the largest counties King (Seattle) and Snohomish (Everett) approved it 66% to 34%.

No party hats yet, we vote by mail here so this could go until New Year's.

Still have a little pride for this state.

Gay marriage would stand a better chance if its proponents eliminated the word "marriage" until another generation dies out and made a heartfelt plea to conservative objections of keeping the government out of people's lives. They won't win many over but it might be enough, or it might be enough to just stop a few from voting one way or the other.
