this election is excellent news for john mccain!

there are some special elections being held today, but to hear the inside-the-beltway pundits talk about it, it's a whole referendum on obama's administration.

for instance, via greg sergent, we find adam nagourney from the tabloid of note, telling us:

in this supposedly quiet off-year election, three contests taking place tuesday are filling the void. voters in new jersey and virginia will elect governors, while voters in upstate new york are filling a vacant house seat in a race with national implications.

mr. nagourney goes on to explore the possible results of each of these three races and how important they will be for obama, the democrats and the newly-revitalized (now! with more teabaggers!) gop.

for those of you keeping score, the races in question are:

the governership of new jersey (dem corzine v. gop incumbent christie)[ed. note: corzine was the incumbent, our mistake. and he is no longer).

the governership of virginia (gop connell, apparent winner, v. dem deeds)

and representative for new york state district 23 (dem owens v. crazy wingnut hoffman, w/gop sozzafava dropping out last weekend)

another election, not discussed by mr. nagourney, is taking place in maine, in the form of a referendum on gay marriage.

the conventional wisdom is that if the goppers win, this means obama should be impeached. it will signal a resurgence of the permanent repubbblican majority. the teabaggers will count their almost-certain victory as a sign to drive the moderates out of their party and become even more ideologically pure, if that's even possible.

the democrats debate this idea, of course. and we'd have to agree.

for one thing, new york 23 hasn't elected a democrat in over 150 years. so for an even more conservative (nutcase hoffman) to win, as he most assuredly will, would not be that much of a sea-change in the district. a dem doesn't win a seat a dem hasn't won in 150 years? stop the presses!

more to the point, nobody's talking about the special election for california's 10th district, in which dem. lt. gov. john garamendi is the favorite. so even if nutjob hoffman wins in ny-23, there will still be a dem (most probably) representing cal-10. not a tipping of power in the house, in our opinion.

but as the commentors @ dem underground point out, a that election doesn't support the meme "obama lost his mojo."
