at least they have healthcare available

so they can actually go to a doctor or be hospitalized without losing their job, their savings, their homes....
swine flu cases in britain could soar to 100,000 a day by next month, government warns. millions of britons will contract swine flu in the coming months, the health secretary predicted yesterday. - london daily mail
think of all the americans who could be walking around spreading the swine flu unknowingly because they can't afford to go to a doctor.

Hi Jill,

Well, I usually agree woth you 100% but I think you are a bit over on this one.

Folks with flu of any kind are supposed to stay at home. Period.

Except if they have severe illness with emergency warning signs. Then you arrange to go to a doc, with mask on, for evaluation and possible antivirals.

In the early stages of an epidemic you might get tested...and find out weeks later which flu you have. But, if the epidemic is wide spread your doc likely will not even have you tested.

It's not a matter of whether they can afford health care or not. They should stay home. Evaluating why they would not stay home, why they would choose to wander around infecting others is, well, another discussion...

Oh yea, in Britain folks are being told to stay home! And only "at risk" folks are getting antivirals.

Steve -
Sure people are supposed to stay home, but, 1) they feel awful but how do they know it's the flu? 2) they can't afford to take off a day of work and so they don't? 3) they feel cruddy but they have no money to go to the doctor and think that they'll get better with over the counter stuff?

I speak from experience. I can't afford to take off any day that I get a job. I don't have money to see a doctor, even though I pay for health insurance, that's just to make sure they'll take me to a hospital should I suffer a major asthmatic attack.

It happens ALL the time. Sad to say.
