these guys are such dicks

publius at least should be glad he isn't an abortion provider...once those guys are outed, it's real dangerous out there!

so ed whelan got his panties in a bunch because publius @ obsidian wings apparently linked to two other bloggers, eugene volokh & anonymous liberal, that disagreed w/ed.

that, plus publius' calling ed a "know-nothing demagogue," made ed so mad that he outed publius by revealing his real name and work situation.

not cool @ all. but of course, this is the hardly-ever-right wing we're talking about. it's not like publius was spreading unfounded rumors about ed, or even exposing personal information (no, that's what ed did to publius).

the worst publius did was disagree, dissect ed's argument, and name-call, if you can say "know-nothing demogogue" is a name calling, which, we suppose technically it is, but it's one of the least offensive and polite names we've ever heard in blogtopia and yes, we coined that phrase.

oh, you scallywag! you are a pompous layabout, sirrah! and your entire family are ne'er-do-wells!

sheesh. get a life, ed. it's the nature of blogtopia and yes, we coined that phrase, to disagree vehemently. you are lucky that publius bothered to actually explain, point by point, where he found your argument lacking. most people just say they're going to slap your face w/their cock.

we were going to describe why ed is such a little baby for going to extremes, but once again hilzoy (who herself was outed) does it better:

more importantly: in thinking about this issue, it's important to separate three distinct questions:

(1) should people blog under pseudonyms?

(2) if someone blogs under a pseudonym, should s/he expect not to be outed?

(3) if you find out the real name of a pseudonymous blogger, should you reveal it?

personally, i think that the answers to these questions are: (1) if they want to; (2) not if s/he has decent circulation, and (3) not absent a compelling reason. but one can give all sorts of different answers to these questions. for instance, you can think that people ought not to blog under pseudonyms, and should expect to be outed if they do, but also think that you, personally, ought not to reveal a pseudonymous blogger's name if you learn it. (compare: it would be dumb to leave your house unlocked, at least in a city, and a person who does so should not expect that she will not be robbed, but it does not follow that you should just up and burglarize that person's house absent a good reason. if you did, it would be morally obtuse to say: well, what did you expect?)

i think there is a presumption that people should be able to decide for themselves what facts about themselves to reveal; and that decent people should respect this, absent some compelling reason not to. of course, there are compelling reasons: if it turned out that an anonymous blogger on a white supremacist site was in fact the person in charge of the department of justice's civil rights division, that would be worth knowing. but absent some such reason, i think that people's own decisions about what to reveal should be respected.
joe gandelman @ the moderate voice has a complete rundown on how blogtopia, and yes, we coined that phrase, is reacting (and may we take a moment to point out the moderate voice's new re-design, which looks mah-velous!); prof. volokh, who believes whelan won the original argument (about sotomayor), nonetheless thinks ed crossed the line.

(we'd like to point out here that prof. volokh is one of the few hardly-ever-right wingers to actually realize and acknowledge the difference between pseudonymity and anonymity; this is why he's smart and ed is a dick).

also, lawyers, guns and money parses the particulars of the original arguments in a clean, efficient manner

Roo,..leaving aside the pollock on the cheek gameing...
You are correct in my opinion to state your first two questions in the format you chose..
AND you own answers are also essential nothing to be aroused over (I just couldnt leave it alone, sorry)...

But question three is and has Always been an unequivocal ,"No" in answer...It is the very nature of electronic communication that your signal can and always will be interceptable.. and as such it can and if deemed interesting enough will be disgorged for all it is worth and all the info it contains...
This has dick all ( sorry) to do with respect Roo...it is human nature to look behind the curtain...
I am sorry I'll not lecture you ever again ...your judgement is better than mine on these issues (I think anyway) and as such I'll just say I disagree about the last issue (man that was hard, damn...there it is again...)...heheheheh

"hophip" verification....
Terrible. Just last month Mudflats got outted.

This is a first impression that's going to stick. Whenever I hear of Ed Whelan now, I'll automatically think, "That's the jackass who outs people he disagrees with."

Real class act, Ed...

I was thinking along the same lines, Jim, but I was thinking, "Ed Whelan, that's that asshole who throws hissy fits."

Exactly..."hissy fits"...all that is going on here...it IS deplorable , it IS stupid...but that does not stop it from happening.
It does not stop it from being somewhat damaging to another...
