I dont know which version I like better, Bob's or Jimi's... I have over the years heard haunting versions by other artists as well.
But for me just as Joe Cocker re-wrought (and I think better) "I Get By With A little Help From My Friends"... Jimi's version is a signature piece and certainly a standard for raw power and scope.
I like Bob's original very much, but I think Jimi's version, and Jeff Buckley's cover of "Hallelujah," are two of the best covers ever (Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" is up there too). Bob's version is spooky and chilling, but Jimi's is an arcane incantation. Regardless, I love this damn song.

Freaky as it is...I am constantly surprised by the depth and breadth od Dylan's work...it will be decades being covered, discovered, and re-examined...
But you know...you are spot on about Jimi and his "arcane incantation".
Aside from the "Watchmen" ... this song has been getting some serious playtime and mention in the final season of "Battlestar Galactica."
