put this on your "to do" list for 2009

take quick showers and use the excess dirty water for your victory garden in the backyard.
despite recent storms, state surveyors reported tuesday that snow levels in the sierra nevada are below average for this time of year, making water rationing almost certain in 2009 with california's water supply in crisis.

...in october, the agency announced that it would deliver just 15 percent of the water requested by cities and farmers statewide in 2009 - the second-lowest level since deliveries began in 1962.

Short showers while the area golf courses use more water than you would in 20 years? While agriculture and industry spoils our lakes and rivers and aquifers?

My area is already using reverse osmosis to desalinate water while the second largest lake in the US is poisoned daily by sugar groves, citrus groves and paper manufactures and factory farms.

If Florida, it's water, water everywhere but not a drop that hasn't been polluted.

Saving a gallon two around the house won't compensate for this nor for the constant increase in population in areas with limited water resources.

I have to agree with Capt. Fogg, although I do like the idea of a victory garden.

There isn't anything "sustainable" about the majority of life in the southwestern US. I'm definitely in the "somethin's gotta give" camp, but conservation needs to happen on a large scale--everywhere. And fast. Have you heard of the transition towns movement?
