the gop's talking points are tired

we've managed to stay out of the "obama must be goofy because he recommends america inflates their tires" argument, because we thought the argument itself was, well, goofy. it seemed like just another made-up tempest in a teapot that the gopers were beating to death to create a false meme. and the dems were doing very little, as usual, to counter the narrative.

it turns out that we were right: it's a made up tempest in an imaginary teapot. time:

but who's really out of touch? the bush administration estimates that expanded offshore drilling could increase oil production by 200,000 bbl. per day by 2030. we use about 20 million bbl. per day, so that would meet about 1% of our demand two decades from now. meanwhile, efficiency experts say that keeping tires inflated can improve gas mileage 3%, and regular maintenance can add another 4%. many drivers already follow their advice, but if everyone did, we could immediately reduce demand several percentage points. in other words: obama is right.
even more amazing, nedra pickler herself comes out in defense of obama's facts. asspress:

but mccain is wrong when he says inflating tires is the only thing obama is proposing to address america's energy challenges.

besides the recommendation to keep tires properly inflated, obama also suggested providing incentives for people to trade in gas guzzling vehicles for more fuel-efficient cars; investing in research and development to produce new fuel-saving technologies like long-running batteries; encouraging innovation in alternative energies; and retrofitting buildings to make them more energy efficient.
but, of course, nobody makes a profit if americans inflate their tires. except for the now-mandatory 25 cents it takes to operate the air hose at the local filling station, there's no money to be made telling folks to maintain their tire pressure.

that's why offshore drilling is the gop's preferred treatment for high gas prices. (tip o'the kangaroo tail to memeorandum for the links!)

It was a moronic comment on Obama's part and it makes you wonder who the hell is feeding this puppet his lines?

That's the kind of advice you hear from the local newscast when they are trying to improve their "green" image, not from the goddamn President of the United States!

Hillary would never have said something so naively stupid. It smacks of Jimmy Carter's sweater and thermostat fireside chat!
