not to add fuel to the fire

we try not to comment on the obama v. clinton flame wars, in hopes of letting them die of attrition (the flame wars, not the candidates).

but we must remark on the clintonites' recent meme that hillary has won the popular vote in the primary, as if that in itself should count for something.

note to hillary: we know a guy who might have something to say about how important the popular vote is.

The counterargument to your point, Skip, is that Gore gave up too easily and we all moaned and bitched about that, as well.

And of course, another argument is that the percentage difference in totals between Gore-Bush was less than half a percent.

Typically, that forces a recount, like what happened in Florida and a few other places. (check your local election laws)

Clinton's "popular vote" lead over Obama is something closer to 2%, last I checked. Now that typically forces a recount too, but its actually a greater lead than what Gore had (or maybe not. Given the convictions for vote fraud in places like St Louis since then, you never know.)

Machine politics is so much fun.

ok, guys, you force me to point out that clinton is not counting caucus states in her attempt to look electable.

so, if obama decided to count only the states that he did well in, he'd be ahead in popular vote, too.

Clinton also disregards the fact that Obama wasn't on the ballot in Michigan, giving her a 320k advantage in the popular vote. Without Michigan, Hillary loses the popular vote as well.

At lets face it, Obama wasn't exactly racing to primary states this past month.

this is all clinton math --- you know the old new math,,,,,

actually if all the math is done "right"...less fuzzy- Obama actually has about 16,000 votes more ( again I think that is counting the Caucus states...and yes, also Michigan too- her number is NOT with Michigan)....

I don't even know what the final superdel or del count was...

but I do know he reached the finish line...2118...that was the goal...

Actually skippy, you're wrong again.

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2008/president/democratic_vote_count.html

Clinton is ahead with the estimates from the caucus states. Obama ONLY pulls out ahead by if your give him ALL of the 238,000+ Uncommitted votes from Michigan, which neglects to split those votes with Edwards and Biden who also pulled their names from the vote.

So you're saying that because BushCo stole Gore's votes, it's okay now if the Dems do it to themselves? And this is supposed to make us feel better about the Democrats how??? Democrats emulating the GOP is hardly Change I want to believe in, but I believe it, that's for sure.

I was gonna point out that you need some incredibly creative (read: squichy) math to support Clinton's claim, but damn Skippy (so to speak), ya beat me to it.

But because I'm a nitpicker, I'll elucidate just a smidge: So you have to count ALL the Michigan votes for her even though no other person was on the ballot (except possibly Kucinich), and even then, "Uncomitted" took some 40 per cent of the vote (i.e., "anyone but Clinton"); plus you count ALL the Florida votes for her, even though Florida deliberately flouted the rules and should face a penalty; plus you do not (because you cannot) include any of the popular vote from the caucus states which do not report popular vote totals, and which Obama overwhelmingly won; and you turn a blind eye to certain irregularities, like the voters of Harlem not casting a single vote for Obama. Then she ekes ahead of him in the popular vote.

Bearing in mind, of course, that if you agree to play chess, then start making checkers moves, you've already lost the game.
