easy to solve problem....

let's just not raise the price anymore...
mom-and-pop service stations are running into a problem as gasoline marches toward $4 a gallon: thousands of old-fashioned pumps can't register more than $3.99 on their spinning mechanical dials.

the pumps, throwbacks to a bygone era on the american road, are difficult and expensive to upgrade, and replacing them is often out of the question for station owners who are still just scraping by. - latte times

I remember when gas went over a $1.00 a gallon and some gas stations had the same problem in that the pumps were set up for a price only as high as 99.9 cents. Some went to pricing by liters and others to half-gallons. Pricing by liter confused too many people and was soon discontinued. When they made new pumps that would allow pricing above $1.00 you would have thought they would have set them up so they could set the price at any price.
This just shows how short sighted most business' are.

I recall the same Back in the prehistoric ages ('70's) during the oil crisis the same happened it was solved with sticker to inform the customers that the dial only showed 50% of the sales price, i.e. today a $4/gal will show $2/gal,
