donuts go nuts

our call for a boycott against dunkin' donuts (for being weasly little poopy-pantsers in the face of michelle malkin's implied threats) is picking up steam!

distributorcapny sent this letter:

dunkin' brands, inc.
130 royall st.
canton, ma 02021

will a. kussell, president & cheif brand officer
catherine saar, director of brand marketing

i am deeply disturbed that you have chosen to pull your advertisement featuring rachael ray in a scarf due to the views and opinions of an extremist bigot like michelle malkin. just to remind you, ms. malkin is also the same person who gave out the home address of a small child because he spoke up in favor of the s-chip health insurance law in an advertisement, a bill that ms. malkin was vehemently against.

is dunkin donuts management really that ignorant and easily manipulated as to think that when americans see a frilly black and white scarf worn by ms. ray, they immediately conjure up images of arab terrorism? this is irrational corporate behavior taken to an extreme i have not seen since p&g had to defend their corporate logo (about the 666 symbol) several years back. as a matter of fact it is downright scary that dunkin donuts would allow themselves to be victimized by such racist behavior. what's next – you cannot use arabica coffee beans because of the word "arab" in the name of the bean?

considering i feel your actions are completely unwarranted and actually quite ridiculous, and being that i have many choices of coffee and donuts in the morning, i have chosen to take my business to another retailer. i do not feel i can continue to be a customer of a company that is easily bullied into siding with racist bigots like michelle malkin. perhaps if you publicly reconsider your position and denounce ms. malkin's idiotic statement, i will reconsider my choice in coffee. in addition, i will also stop purchasing baskin-robbins ice cream, who knows what terror groups rocky road might be signaling?

regards,
other skippy readers have joined in with their own letters. and a big thanks goes out to mike's blog round up at c&l as well as our good buddy dave johnson of seeing the forest for linking to our call to arms!

addendum: add whallah! to the list of folks blogging about our boycott! and here's the letter rob of laughing at the pieces wrote to dunkin'!

Please, please, please!!

Alert the world that John McCain is a closet Muslim. If you notice on his campaign logo, the star is directly over the capital "C."

see: http://www.johnmccain.com/

This looks suspiciously similar to the crescent and star symbol for Islam.

Let Michelle know as she hates ALL semi-circles!

"is dunkin donuts management really that ignorant and easily manipulated as to think that when americans see a frilly black and white scarf worn by ms. ray, they immediately conjure up images of arab terrorism?"

Sorry, Skippy, but I have to disagree with you on this one. DD is just trying to sell coffee and donuts. They aren't interested in any of that and the decision to pull the ad was probably made this way. "Oh crap, that shithead Malkin is stirring up trouble for us because of a scarf. I can't believe it. We don't need this crap. Pull the ad and let's see if we can get Ray back in for a second shoot. If not, see if Paula Deen is available. She's better known for grease and sugar than Ray anyway."

I don't have any animous towards DD. I feel sorry for them being caught in yet another faked up outrage by someone who hadn't seen her name in the headlines in a while and wanted attention.

dbk,

I'm sorry that DD felt that had to cave to complete morons who would equate a PAISLEY B&W scarf to terrorists.

And I agree with skippy, if DD is that craven they should suffer a drought from reasonable people.

I know they're just trying to sell donuts, but when the 23%ers just suggest, not call for, a boycott, and DD caves, it's time to show DD that the majority of people in this who country actually buy their donuts aren't bat$hit crazy.

Yep, DD got caught in a wrongwing $hitstorm. They should have stood up and said 'WTF!? Are these people crazy?'

Simple answers to simple questions: YES!

Dunkin' Donuts always made me sick to my stomach when I was a kid. Maybe I knew intuitively they were produced by a fascist and ignorant company.

Or maybe it was just the oil.

Either way, I now have another incentive to never eat one of their crappy donuts again.

Current Slogan:
America runs on Dunkin'

Suggested Slogan:
America runs from Dunkin'

Michele Malkin is a certified head case.

Uh, yeah, sure,. DD is "craven". Oh, and "fascist".

Okay, have your great, self-righteous hissy fit over a company that dropped Rachael Ray freakin' coffee commercial. That's probably as noble a cause as any to spout off sbout. Work it up into some big dealie about "principle" while you're at it.

You might (or might not!) be pleased to know that ANSWER sent out an email yesterday calling for a boycott of DD, and has a web page set up to sent an automated email to DD:

Boycott: Don't Shop at Dunkin' Donuts!
Say No to Anti-Arab Racism

The ANSWER Coalition and others are calling for a worldwide boycott of Dunkin’ Donuts. The boycott intends to send a powerful message to Dunkin’ Donuts and other corporations that engage in racism or pandering to anti-Arab and anti-Muslim racists.

Please lend your name to the boycott by clicking this link and send a letter to Dunkin' Donuts. Be sure to circulate this call to your friends on list serves and social networking sites.

Here’s the background:

Dunkin’ Donuts has capitulated and withdrawn an advertisement for its products following the allegation by a right-wing hack, Michelle Malkin, that the spokeswoman in the ad was pictured wearing a kaffiyeh, a scarf which is a staple of clothing traditionally worn by Palestinian men.

The scarf pictured in the ad is not actually a kaffiyeh. But the anti-Arab racism of the right-wing, pro-Bush ideologues like Malkin is so extreme that they launched their campaign because they “thought” the scarf was this traditional Arab garment. Dunkin’ Donuts pulled their ad apologizing that the scarf might even resemble a kaffiyeh.

In Malkin’s twisted world anything “Arab,” even a scarf, is “terrorist.” This is the same line of thinking promoted by the Bush administration in the wake of 9/11, when thousands of Middle Eastern men living in the United States were rounded up and falsely imprisoned. Some were even tried on phony “terrorism” charges. It is the same line of thinking that was used to promote the racist war drive against Afghanistan and then Iraq.

The fact that a giant corporation like Dunkin’ Donuts quickly pulled the advertisement is a sign that the pervasive racism, chauvinism and xenophobia peddled by right-wing bigots is a real danger. This is a classic tactic of fascist intimidation and demonization of an entire population.

We demand that Dunkin’ Donuts immediately apologize to the Arab-American community for this disgraceful surrender to racism. Until that apology is issued we will refuse to shop or buy any products marketed by the Dunkin' Donuts Corporation.

Please lend your name to the boycott by clicking this link and send a letter to Dunkin' Donuts. Be sure to circulate this call to your friends on list serves and social networking sites.

Please make an urgently needed donation right now to help build this boycott and important campaign against racism.
Incidentally, your discussion of what a kaffiyeh is (and isn't) isn't quite right - see this article for the real history.
I blogged about it yesterday.
