the rhodes not taken

randi rhodes has been suspended "indefinitely" from air america because of an off-air stand up routine in which she called sen. clinton a "f*cking wh*re." dailynews:

air america radio, which already has enough problems, suspended afternoon host randi rhodes thursday for remarks she made during an off-the-air public event in san francisco.

rhodes called democratic presidential candidate hillary clinton a "f------ whore," several times, in the course of a standup comedy routine built on political bits.

her specific problem with clinton, said rhodes in the routine, is that she's disingenuous: "her deal is, 'read the fine print, a-------.' "

rhodes has long been critical of clinton on her air america radio show…

when a video of the routine hit youtube, new air america chairman charlie kireker issued a statement saying, "air america has suspended on-air host randi rhodes for making inappropriate statements about prominent figures, including senator hillary clinton, at a recent public appearance on behalf of air america in san francisco.

"air america encourages strong opinions about public affairs but does not condone such abusive, ad hominem language by our hosts."

kireker, a long-time democratic party activist, has ties to the clintons.
kireker's statement can be found here.

we've enjoyed randi, harking back to her days in miami, and have always encouraged people to listen to her. but this sort of vitriol is the very thing we have been admonishing blogtopia and yes, we coined that phrase, against.

the last thing we need is dems v. dems.

(tip o' the kangaroo tail to make them accountable for the link to kireker's statement!)

addendum: let us make our position clear: we are all for free speech. we also think that kirekek's suspension of randi, while within his purview as aar owner, was nonethelss over the top. we would not be surprised if his "ties" to the clintons had something to do with it.

that being said, however, we feel that randi had an obligation to watch her mouth in a public arena, vis-a-vis sexist remarks. while that was by no stretch of the imagination justification for removing her from the airwaves, it did serve no purpose to pollute the public discourse with something so foul.

we heart randi, but we feel the same way about her as we do several of our blog buddies as of late; damn, we long for the good old days when the common enemy was the gop, and not each other.

double addendum: what brandy said.

I've heard worse language in standup routines. Note that this was not an on-the-air official Air America event that she was at, this was a fundraiser for an individual community radio station. She got canned for something she said on her own time away from the office, in other words.

The fact of the matter is that Charlie Kireker has been trying to get rid of Randi ever since he came on board as CEO of AAR, because she is ideologically incorrect and does not properly comply with the Party line (where the Party = the old-line Democratic Party establishment, currently esconced in the Clinton camp). Her ultimate crime is ideological impurity, not a stand-up routine where she used some obscene language to get a reaction from the crowd. Prediction: She will not be coming back to Air America Radio.

Remember, Comrade, in McSoviet America you are free to have opinions. Just don't express those opinions which contradict Party heterodoxy, and you will be okay with your Party commissars, da?

The statements were made at a fundraiser for an Air America affiliate station- which is close enough to being in house to count.

No one is taking offense to the fact that she used the "f"-bomb or other similarly colorful obscenities. It is the fact that she used the term "whore".

She wasn't accusing either woman of sexual promiscuity (which is the widely accepted definition of that word). She needed a word that could cut both women down to size quickly and she defaulted to "whore" because what better way to show a woman she's worthless than to suggest she is sexual.

That was what was offensive. And if you took away all of the shock value tactics, there wasn't much of a speech left.

Whether or not Charlie Kireker wants to get rid of her, he didn't write the speech or make her say those words. I haven't listened to Air America in awhile but I enjoyed her show when I did. But that speech seemed like it was adapted from one written by a thirteen year old in 1985 with modern politicians inserted into the blanks.

I don't think this has anything to do with not needing dems v. dems; it has to do with sexism and incivility and, frankly, just plain juvenility (?), akin to making fun of John Bolton because he has a funny mustache. It just betrays a lack of political insight and yes, you can demonstrate political insight without resorting to such nonsense, as Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert demonstrate nightly.
I didn't see Randi's act as an attempt at insight, but, rather, as an attempt to entertain. A lame one, yes, and your point is? Do you know how many lame standup acts there are? Should we go out and have them all fired from their day jobs because, well, their act sucks?

And an Air America "affiliate" is a community radio station that happens to subscribe to Air America for some programming, they're not owned by Air America or have any connection with Air America other than that they buy a few hours of air time from Air America Radio. They also generally buy shows from other sources. If someone does a fundraiser for one of these stations, she's doing a fundraiser for the station -- NOT for Air America. She's "off the clock", so to speak.

As for the particular word she used, I often refer to the mainstream media as "presstitutes", as in, they're sucking Republican d*ck for pay. Does this mean that I'm being anti-female or something? Beats me, but I'm not the only person who's referred to "presstitutes" in the past -- John at AmericaBlog and TBogg have both used the term (granted, most often in the case of JimJeff Gannon/Gucker, who not only was a presstitute but ALSO a male prostitute, go figure!).

All in all, this is just a case of Air America wanting to get rid of Randi, and latching onto the first plausible excuse to do so. Yeah, the act was in bad taste. Yeah, it was politically incorrect as hell. I guess those are crimes in McSoviet America. Thank you for enlightening me, Citizen!

Tux,

NEvertheless, she was billed as an AAR personality for a station that carries AAR programming.

Sorry, she earned her sin bin time, and I say that as a big Randi fan.

it was a comedy routine for gawds sake.
not a great one, to be sure, but show me a comedy routine by chris rock or anyone else that is "polite"

Randi did a comedy routine in a Night Club. AAR wants to shit-can her and found an opening. AAR wants to be the HRC network if at all possible and Randi in the last couple weeks has come out in support of Obama.

Limbaugh, Hannity, O'Reilly, Beck etc say much worse on the public air waves and there is no clamor for them to be suspended.

This is an opportunity and AAR seized on it.

My guess is she is on her way out and will go to NOVAM where John Manzo and Mike Malloy are. I think AAR wants to go more DLC which is the same as going more HRC.

Should have heard some of the stuff Limbaugh said about Hillary on the air a few days ago...no one seems to care about that...

Again what Randi said was in a nightclub, a comedy routine, in front of fans who came to see her.

The Clintons have made $50 million since leaving the White House. People seem to forget the Lincoln Bedroom for sale. Those tax returns should be out soon...

I have to agree with BadTux and Polishifter on this one, although Carl does have a point - she was "representin'" ...but it was a "fundraiser" and her remarks were for the room not for over the air.

After all the Democratic Party can't even get their own shit together - is Charlie Kireker going to blame that on Randi too?

Is it just me, or has this whole campaign gone out of control with 'pul-it-i-kal kor-ekt-niz'. Issues should be the subject, not grammar.

Name calling is juvenile, but it's just bad stand-up comedy people, come on. (I laughed my ass off).

Peace,

The "dems vs. dems" line of reasoning doesn't apply here because Clinton is a far right fundamentalist Christian Republican posing as a Democrat. Clinton also is a war criminal.

I disagree with the way Rhodes worded her comments. Sometimes people use the word "whore" as a substitute for "bought politician." I don't like the practice and prefer to refer to Ms. Clinton as a bought politician.

Well, I'm sorry, skippy, but whatever one thinks of Hillary Clinton, she is a fucking whore. She wants to be nicer to Richard Mellon Scaife than to Barack Obama, just to save her hopeless cause. You can't get any more whorish than that.

And I'd like to see the Dems go after the GOP instead of each other, too. But you know what? Those good old days probably never existed -- the Democrats have always been this way, at least in my lifetime. The last eight years have taught these idiots nothing at all.

David Brooks was right (for once) when he said Hillary possesses the audacity of hopelessness...

my question to everyone is, assuming the premise that obama doesn't get the nod, would you rather have president mccain than president clinton?
commented by Blogger skippy, 11:22 PM PDT
Good lord. You're right, Skippy. I take a backseat to nobody in my enthusiasm for Obama's candidacy, and I would very much prefer not to have Clinton as the nominee.
But a circular firing squad does nobody any good-particularly when it's made up of ad hominem, Limbaugh-esque crap like this.
Sure, she's free to do it, and Air America is free to do whatever they want in response, but Rhodes's tirade is an example of the problem.
"Hillary Clinton is a whore" is how people that are bad at communicating say this. Or this.
If Rhodes is the best "our side" can do, our side kinda sucks.

skippy: The Clintons always campaign from the center and govern from the right. Hillary McCain and John Clinton are committed to the same Reagan/Bush/Clinton agenda.

If Clinton steals the nomination with a superdelegates scam, the best thing to do is to vote Green to teach the corrupt leadership of the Democrats a lesson and try to nominate a Real Democrat in 2012.

Freedom of speech only goes so far, especially when as public representative of a compnay. I've know Pepsi workers who could get fired for drinking Coke.

Anyway, if you ask me the best part of this story is the fact nobody -- and I mean nobody -- is talking about. And that is that this was an Obama event, promoted on his website. Seems like typical Obama fashion, let his supporters do some nasty bit of work while he pretends to take the high road.

Anyway, here't the link from his site promoting the event: http://my.barackobama.com/page/event/detail/4r2cc

Quoting from the site:

Come join other Bay Area Obama supporters for an evening with Air America host Randi Rhodes!

She was quieter in her support earlier in the primary season, but this week Randi Rhodes has been on fire with her passion for Obama (and disappointment/anger with his opponent). Today (3/7), she spent nearly her whole show urging people to get to Pennsylvania or to call Pennsylvania on behalf of Senator Obama.

Let's show her some Bay Area love and have a chance to get together socially as well. Spend your afternoon phonebanking and then join us (in Obamawear of course) for a great evening. Doors open at 5:30 pm, event is at 6:00 pm.

This event is $5 at the door, and you sign-up in advance via Green 960 radio station's website.
http://www.green960.com/pages/events.html?feed=211592&article=3368653

After the event, we can all head to a place in the neighborhood for drinks and organizing for winning Pennsylvania, the nomination and the White House.

Watching the dems implode from within is Rich. No other way to describe it. John McCain will make a fine President. dems never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity! Randi Rhodes is only the latest pathetic example. But wait more idiocy from the Left still awaits us..

A genuine question for those who do listen to Rhodes regularly: is this how she speaks normally? I don't mean is she normally aiming to be edgy. I'm referring to the word "whore" in particular.

If she does, then I am disappointed in the Obama campaign's participation (and I am a supporter). But if her behavior normally stops short of crossing a line, they might not have known how far she would go.

There are people saying this is a free speech issue and others saying
"at least she isn't as bad as Limbaugh".

Free speech is meant to protect you from the government telling you what not to say. Your employer can prohibit you from saying whatever they want. How AAR associated the event was doesn't really matter. I have a staff of writers. If I found out that one of them was giving sexist (or racist, or anti-gay) speeches, they would be disciplined because that is not what my business stands for and their name is associated with my business. And they knew that when they signed on.

As for "not being as bad as Limbaugh"- I would surely hope that he isn't the litmus test for what is acceptable. "Well, as long as you're better than Limbaugh, you're fine" is going to leave a lot of room for some very bad behavior.

The Clinton's made over $100 million over the past 7 years. Perhaps whore was a poor choice of works. Randi should have just called Hillary a sellout instead.

What I see are Hillary supporters piling on to bash Randi because they are mad at her for supporting Obama.

Mark Green and Kireker also support Hillary. They saw an opportunity to get her off the air and they took it.

Randi said what she said OFF AIR.

If she had said those things on air I could see AAR suspending her. But she said those things off air to a crowd of people that paid to see her.

AAR should have simply issued a statement saying they don't agree with the expressed views of Randi Rhodes. Hell, they should probably issue that statement for all there on air hosts.

Instead they made it an issue and decided to use it to Hillary's advantage.

Rush Limbaugh says worse things about Hillary while ON THE AIR and he's still on the air.

Who knows what he says behind closed doors to a paying audience. We will probably never hear about that.

Lincoln Bedroom.

Where are those tax returns Hillary?
commented by Blogger PoliShifter, 3:03 PM PDT
To Hell with Hillary and Air America. I say Randi hit the nail on the head.

The Clintons have really sullied their image and then some with some of the obnoxious bullshit they've been up to in trying to shoot down Obama.

Again, to Hell with Hillary and Air America, too.

It's hilarious to read Obombers whine about Clinton's pseudo-corrupt-aristocratic ties, when Obama's dealing with people who steal Iraqi reconstruction funds.

People, Obama's ambition is to Hillary's what a hooker is to a cheap date, OK? Let's keep in mind that Hillary at least bothered to pay lip service to finishing ONE term in the Senate.

and if you think for one minute that Obama is some saint, you better think twice. He's not interested in a progressive agenda (else he'd have bothered to vote with Feingold on troop withdrawals).

he's out for OBAMA. Period.
commented by Blogger Carl, 6:48 AM PDT
Hillary didn't run in 2004 because running against a popular incumbent war president is a loser's game no matter how good your candidate. She wasn't interested in losing, so stayed out.

As for Obama, I have no delusions about him, indeed make fun of the Obamabots from time to time (e.g. the doctored Bob the Builder picture on my home page right now, basically a statement on the toddler-like adulation that Obamabots shower upon their candidate). That said, he's the best candidate we have in the race at the moment. What that says about the state of politics in America... ain't goin' there.

And all of that is absolutely irrelevant as to whether someone should be fired for a bad shock comedy sketch at an Obama fundraiser that happens to offend the Clintons. That's the sort of thing I expect Republicans to do -- fire someone for ideological reasons.
commented by Blogger BadTux, 10:20 AM PDT
Tux,

Hillary promised in 2000 to serve out her full first term, which means she couldn't run in 2004 anyway, regardless of Bush's "popularity" (which hovered at 40% just before the 2004 election, so she could have kicked his ass).
commented by Blogger Carl, 6:48 AM PDT
