writers who support the band rush on strike at skippy

as some of you may know, skippy's music club has a mission statement that encompasses the late great louis armstrong's theory of music: there is two kinds of music - the good and the bad.

to that end, we have tried to bring our gentle readers the best in a wide variety of genres...from rock to alternative country, opera to golden oldies, jazz to the latest bands seen on fuse-tv.

but we never, ever, ever! will bring you any rush.

rush, is, in our opinion, the lamest band ever to foul the airwaves of music radio. the hooks are tepid, the tunes are forgettable, and geddy lee makes erasure sound macho.

and the lyrics? please. we hate "freewill." because the gist of "freewill" says "i will choose free will."

well, we hate to be the ones to point out the oxymorinic irony in that statement, but, if you can choose anything, you already have free will, and if don't have free will, you wouldn't be able to choose cornflakes for breakfast, let alone a high-concept hobbesian philosophy that sets you squarely in the center of the universe.

so no rush. ever.

but this does not sit well with some writers here at skippy. jim yeager, in particular, likes rush. but we are adamant. no writing about rush allowed.

ergo, all writers who support rush are now officially on strike.

because that's the sort of thing that's important.

addendum: we don't know if brad friedman likes rush or not.

skippy:

as someone who whole-heartedly embraced prog rock in the '70s, I agree about Rush. Cleary talented musicians, their music was an embarrasment to themselves.

And give me Jon Anderson's tenor vocals over Geddy Lee's screech any day.

YMMV

2112 was pretty good. Since I'm not a writer here, I guess I can't go on strike.

So what was this post about, then?

Oh, freewill. Yeah, well if you have a ready guide in some celestial voice, there's your first problem, and maybe it's best to choose for yourself instead of following it...eh?

Now, see, I could have dealt with our politics being so far apart, but, this who Rush thing? Un uh. Rush rules. You have gone too far this time. This means war!!!!! :)

That's some Jon Swift level poking fun :) I love it.

"La Villa Strangiato" ticks like a Swiss watch, dude.

Rush is a Canadian band, so thank to Canadian
content rules, Canadian radio plays Rush "music"
incessantly.

Something to keep in mind if McCain becomes
president and you are tempted to move to Canada.

Two minor corrections, skippy. One, I don't like Rush, I love 'em. And two, your opinion sits well enough with me. But perhaps an explanation is in order...

Geddy Lee does have an odd singing voice for a man, I'll grant you that. But it's percussionist Neil Peart who's responsible for drawing me in. He's the main lyricist for the band, and I think he's written some top-notch lyrics over the years. And his drumming is also top-notch -- I've seen Rush live twice, and Peart is such a sight to see when he's pounding away on his kit.

And as for lame when it comes to music, I have two words for you: Soft Cell. What the hell was that?

Wow, I'm so confused, I didn't think anyone one your site liked Rush Limbaugh.

And I never knew Mr Limbaugh was Canadian.

IRT Soft Cell; Bamp Bamp ... need I say more?

soft cell was completely forgettable except for their wonderful melding of "tainted love" and "where did the love go" w/an eerie techno machine beat behind it. and the great thing about that piece was the segue between the two songs, which, if you hadn't heard it before, was completely a surprise.

yes, marc almond's singing voice was detached and rather "soft," but on this particular number, it added a wonderful distance between the emotion of the lyrics and the removed quality of his singing.

That was hilarious.

Ok Skippy we could disagree on just about everything politically and still remain friends but now by dissing Rush you have gone too far!

If you werent so funny I would boycott your blog. no really.

I'm from a different generation and always prefer The Guess Who when I'm in the mood for Canadian music. I love to sit back in my underwear with a Labatts and a rasher of bacon and listen to "Running Back to Saskatoon" on a Saturday night.

Strike all you want, I'm not reading any blog posts about Rush.

Absolutely, positively cannot stand Rush. Or Yes. Both of them sound like caterwauling of the lowest order.

I'll have you know I have many oak trees that are friends of mine. They are just aghast at this blockage of Rush posting here at the ol' skip bloghold. Seriously aghast. I believe they are sharpening their axes as I type.

Hmmm, JUST Rush ? are you sure...I mean I can think of more painful music....Celine Dion ? ( sorry but really- haven't we suffered enough...can't she just retire....again...)....how about the hideous Boy Bands of the 90's....( any and ALL....)....REO Speedwagon ? ......
maybe there should be a LIST....

( I mean that way RUSH won't be lonely....)

Rush is to Progressive rock, what jesus is to Christianity. The greatest drum solo ever in Yyz.you are not alive until you embrace Rush.Seeing them live at Wembley for my 40th birthday was a unlifting moment in my life. This is a driveby comment as I'm surfing thru.....

I threw a joint on stage for him to smoke, he stopped the show, said this could have hit me in the eye, stomped on it, by this time Neil looked up at him with the drumsticks held up and they went back to playing limelight...I guess I was an ass, but I was 17 back in 1979 so why are you talking about them now?

Who are we to tell others what music is good or not? I personally think Rush is the best damn band out there. I love the lyrics, the awsome drumming skill of Neil Pert, and yes, I even like Geddy Lee's voice (In fact, Geddy's unique voice got me into the band in the first place, even though his voice isn't all that manly) But hey, if you don't like Rush, whatever, your loss. As stated, there are other bands/singers that are MUCH worse.
