earlier this week: us military says spike in iraq violence not a trend:

dozens of people have died this week in bombings and gunfire across iraq, including 12 american soldiers. the u.s. military acknowledges the toll has risen recently, but says it does not represent a trend. daniel schearf reports for voa from the northern iraqi city of irbil.
yesterday: two killed, 18 wounded in iraq violence:

baghdad - at least two people were killed and 18 wounded in violent attacks across iraq, the us military and media reports said saturday.

in the city of kut, some 180 kilometres south-west of the iraqi capital baghdad, a police officer was killed and eight were injured during intense clashes between militants and iraqi forces in the late hours of friday, the voices of iraq (voi) news agency said.

in the late hours of tuesday, militants clashed intensively with iraqi forces in kut, leaving at least 11 dead and 40 injured. but voi reported that clashes are still continuing while violence flares across the city.

four civilians were wounded, when the us consulate in the southern city of babel was attacked in the late hours of friday.

Oh come now,

ofcourse we expect violence to spike when senator bomb bomb and Darth Cheney visit Iraq. They are trying to intimidate them.
