he calls a spade a...whoops...

via talking points memo, here's lou dobbs whining about how racially sensitive america is, where he almost calls condaleeza rice a "cotton-picking" something...

he catches himself in time, but it's a great example of the pot calling the kettle...uh...we mean, it's funny.

I know that there was almost a moment of spooky irony in all that, but I've never given any racial connotation to the popular use of the phrase. In fact, from a popular online dictionary:

cotton-picking (American & Australian, informal)
something that you say before a noun to express anger. Get your cotton-picking feet off my chair!

and...

cot·ton-pick·ing (ktn-pkng)
adj. Informal
Used as an intensive: a cotton-picking fool; out of your cotton-picking mind.

I dunno, perhaps it had some sort of racial roots, but looked at from a literal perspective, the reality is cotton is 'picked' on virtually every continent on the globe, therefore making the label of "cotton picker" applicable to just about any race.

Another theory? It might have simply emerged as a safe substitute for actual profanity, perhaps because it matches the syllables or something. lol
