it's hard out here for a pimp

nbc has suspended david schuster for a metaphor that's usually reserved for school yard taunts and letters to penthouse. tv newser:

on thursday's "tucker" on msnbc, david shuster, who was serving as guest-host of the program, made a comment about chelsea clinton and the clinton campaign that was irresponsible and inappropriate. shuster, who apologized this morning on msnbc and will again this evening, has been suspended from appearing on all nbc news broadcasts, other than to make his apology. he has also extended an apology to the clinton family. nbc news takes these matters seriously, and offers our sincere regrets to the clintons for the remarks.

thanks to tpm election central for the youtube link

asspress reports that the clintons are furious:

in a conference call with reporters, clinton communications director howard wolfson on friday excoriated msnbc's david shuster for suggesting the clinton campaign had "pimped out" 27-year old chelsea by having her place phone calls to celebrities and democratic party "superdelegates" on her mother's behalf.

wolfson called shuster's comment "beneath contempt" and disgusting.

"i, at this point, can't envision a scenario where we would continue to engage in debates on that network," he added.
we suppose schuster's suspension (say that three times fast!) was designed to placate sen. clinton, and to persuade her to appear on the debate.

she may want to reconsider boycotting...she's in a tough enough struggle w/barack "to the future" obama to let him have that much airtime all to himself.

addendum: joe gandelman at the moderate voice has a great round up of various blog and media reactions to this fracas.

i think msnbc has done everything they can to make it clear that david shuster's remarks do not represent the views of the network, and having suspended him from air and apologized for his comments, they shouldn't be boycotted for the unfortunate but unforeseeable remarks. just my opinion.

on second impression, msnbc still employs chris matthews. i think hillary clinton might be right to boycott, in fact.

I have seen Tweety do MUCH worse...but I guess no one cares about that???And Joe has said a Few things that were not "Okay"...

About the debate- I am being selfish..I wanted to see it in Ohio....but that is just me...I think everyone else is Debated out...but I hope they do it- and that they should let Keith do it...he is all class when he does the debates...

About Shuster....it is really too bad....he is bright and usually does a good job....it is a shame what a few words can do...I hope that his career is not ruined...that would be a waste...but I will miss his reporting..

Ugh. Give me a friggin' break.

My comments here.

I've heard FAR worse on Fox News.... nobody is "suspending" Bill O'Reilly for disparaging remarks about American servicemen & women.

Sheesh.

gee, i remember not too many weeks ago there were several news programs running special bits about the wonderfulness of daughters of republicans running in the primary for their efforts on the campaign trail on behalf of their fathers ... it was presented as just "candidates' daughters," not specifically republican although there were only republicans in the bits. i know one of them was a daughter of mccain, not sure whose the other was, but they were both blonde. but chelsea is "different" and her participation in her parent's bid for the presidential nomination is met with crude, derogatory language.

michael richards is STILL being excoriated for his "inappropriate" tirade, meanwhile imus is back on the air. i guess the outrage is reserved for those perceived to not be part of "the club."

I'm glad she called them out on it ... MSNBC has been making me crazy for weeks with their biased reporting.
