can we raise more money than hillary? yes, we can!
moue magazine, one of the great new blogs we found in our recent blogroll amnesty day adventures, points out that clinton is not doing as well as obama in the $$$ dept.:
for some bizarre reason, big tent armando insisted that last night's showing proved that sen. clinton has stopped obama "for good." skippy pointed out that not only were the delegates almost evenly proportioned out last night, but obama has outraised clinton 3 to 1.
we have never known talkleft to be a spinning machine. and we certainly grant them their enthusiasm for hillary.
and, truth be told, we are not enthusiastic in the least for obama, except to listen to his speeches (da man can talk purty!), so we really have no dog in the fight.
but there's no way that last night can be seen as any sort of definitive step in the campaign process this year. as we said before (and, yes, we were quoted by maha on the mahablog, thanks for noticing!) “super tuesday has come and gone, and about the only thing that has been decided is what a loser mitt romney is.”
the first is that, according to a press release from her campaign, clinton loaned her campaign $5 million in late january. greg sargent at tpm has the goods:this brings up something skippy mentioned over on talkleft.the revelation suggests another emerging dynamic in the race: now that the campaigns are committed to grinding it out for weeks and weeks, perhaps all the way until the convention. the hillary camp faces the prospect of being dramatically outspent by the obama campaign, which has enjoyed huge fundraising success.note that this was before super tuesday — right when they were doing large ad buys in the most expensive media markets in the country. given that, you’d think that her campaign’s cash-on-hand situation wouldn’t be very rosy right now.
in january, for instance, obama raised $32 million — well over double the $13.5 million hillary raised in the same month. this perhaps explains the self-financing loan at the end of last month.
and you may be right. for our second tidbit, mark halperin over at the page is breaking a story from an unidentified source claiming that top clinton staffers are working without salary this month. true, volunteers tend to be more highly motivated, but still…
yes, it’s true that money doesn’t buy elections, and dollars don’t vote (see “romney, mitt”). there, the platitudes are out of the way, so let’s just say that this is not a good sign for clinton.
