dobson hearts huckabee

the american spectator, not usually a source we site (but we love that "[fill in the blank] hearts huckabee" joke), reports that james "focus on family" dobson is poised to endorse gov. mike huckabee for president:

sources close to dobson say that within the next ten days he is coordinating an endorsement plan with the presidential campaign of former arkansas gov. mike huckabee. according to a huckabee insider in iowa, the event would be staged in thatstate at a rally, followed by a bus tour across the state, and an appearance by huckabee on dobson's radio show, which is heard nationally.

dobson's endorsement, according to the huckabee source, could mean millions in fundraising to the campaign, allowing it to compete at the same level with the top tier candidates huckabee has been inching toward in the polls after a series of strong debate and campaign appearances.

"it would help us get to the thompson-mccain level if not higher," says the source. "dr. dobson's endorsement means that much."
wow, all the way to mccain-thompson level? and we thought we were grasping at straws in our race!

even tho giuliani got the endorsement of pat "god is burning universal for scorsese's film" robertson, romney still is pulling ahead. noam scheiber at the new republic reinforces what we told you on thursday:

for all the attention rudy giuliani got with that pat robertson endorsement earlier this week, the numbers increasingly suggest romney is going to be the gop nominee. according to pollster.com, romney's up 14 points in iowa (28.6 to huckabee's 14.8; rudy is third at 13.7), has a steady and slightly widening lead in new hampshire (28.8 to rudy's 21.4), and, perhaps most interestingly, has begun to surge in south carolina lately (he's now in a close third at 16.1, behind thompson's 18.9 and rudy's 19.8; romney was languishing around 10 percent there only a few months ago.) michigan, too, is looking better and better for him. pollster.com shows romney in second with 19.5 to rudy's 21.7, but rudy has been trending down there for the last several months, while romney has been trending up.

on top of the poll numbers, romney has the personal resources to hold rudy at bay spending-wise, particularly in a tough fundraising climate for republicans. so while it's true that rudy hasn't begun his big advertising blitz yet, romney can respond with overwhelming force once he does.

right now the only real threat i see to romney is huckabee in iowa. but i think huckabee would have to win their outright to derail the romney train (something that's certainly possible, but not likely). even a pretty close second by huckabee still leaves giuliani third there at best. and, as i've said before, that probably freezes the status quo in new hampshire, which means a romney win there, followed by likely wins in michigan and south carolina.
meanwhile, over on the dems' side, sen. clinton doesn't look like such a lock these days. the atlantic:

two new reputable polls of new hampshire democratic primary voters will show statistically significant drops in support for frontrtunner hillary clinton, democrats who have seen those polls said today…

one of the polls shows that the gap between clinton and barack obama narrowed by more than 10 points. her biggest decline was seen among older voters.

the other shows clinton's lead over obama reduced by approximately 9 points.
so, it's anybody's race!

Dobson supporters vs. Robertson supporters...it's the Battle Royale of Christian wingnuts!

The other GOP candidates better knock Rudy out. The media won't do it--they're ignoring every lie he tells everyday, and every indictment around him is downplayed. Rudy is an insane dictator--worse than Cheney.

I fear the administration wants Rudy (or whoever will promised to pardon all of them). If Cheney steps down for him, it's all over.

Huckabee doesn't have a chance at all to win the presidency. If you want to check out a real candidate with real values, check out Hillary Clinton. You won't be disappointed.
I've been more worried about Mitt from the outset because Jeb was his rainmaker. And Mitt's worse because of his positions on social issues.

Fortunately, Mitt won't beat any Dem. Even Gravel could take him.
