well, they could have called him "gen. filet us"!!

as mahablog sez, the rightie blogs all are getting the vapors over moveon.org's latest newspaper ad asking if it's "general petraeus or general betray us." she lays out several examples of when the right called established politicians (and presidents) traitors, and wonders why it isn't the same.

we also agree wtih maha that, if moveon asked us, we would have counseled against such incindiary language. and for this reason: as expected, the right is using this opportunity to blast the straw man of "traitor-calling" rather than the issue of whether the surge working, whether the facts presented in front of congress today mesh with observations by others, and whether or not we are spinning our wheels and killing off our young soldiers in iraq.

maha has the full text of the ad which, headline aside, presents a very thoughtful, non-vitriolic fact-based case of why what the general is saying to congress has little to do with the reality of the situation (incuding the bizarre counting policy the military is using to measure the "decrease" in violence; ie, car bombs and getting shot in the front of the head don't count as "violence).

yes, moveon stuck a stick in the hornets nest again. but the questions moveon asks need to be answered, and not ignored by the righties so concerned over somebody rhyming a general's name.

hey, it could have been gen. buckley in charge!

I find it extremely difficult to look at a right wing blog and not break out laughing. They are funny. Does anybody really take them seriously?

The joke works better if it was General Buckus, Skip.
