post a sign, go to jail

we might be inclined to agree w/enigma4ever over at watergate summer, who says that the feeling on the streets of america these days is more reminiscent of nazi germany than anything else.

case in point: two people (a mother and an iraq veteran) were arrested in dc for posting a sign advertising the upcoming anti-iraq war march on sept. 15. via bluegal at c&l, we read the washpost:

the group assembled for a news conference yesterday at lafayette square to promise to put up more posters, regardless of possible sanctions. within minutes, the pledge was tested. an officer approached and asked whether the demonstrators had a permit for their gathering.

as news cameramen focused in on the officer, he commanded the protesters to get back, ordered them to dismantle a table and called for backup.

the officer then got into a tussle over a bucket of paste with tina richards, the mother of an iraq war veteran. "let go of this," he shouted. "if you don't, you will be arrested."

more officers arrived, including several dressed in black commando-style uniforms and one atop a horse that he maneuvered to push back the crowd.

"back up!" he shouted.

an officer placed handcuffs on richards, of missouri, and put her in the back of a police car. a few feet away, kristine klein, 13, richards's daughter, started crying. she said that another officer had grabbed her arm and pushed her.

as richards tried to call to her daughter from the cruiser, another officer closed the window.
again, thanks to c&l, we bring you the youtube video of the arrests:

Those cops must be awfully proud of themselves, standing their ground against a 13-year-old girl.

Life in America may look like Germany circa 1942 or -3, but it feels more like the fall of Rome. Except our collapse is happening much quicker...

Perhaps Rove is going to help organize the brownshirts across America and stomp out those pesky protesters once and for all.

While the arrests of these American citizens and the violation of their constitutional rights very well could be politically motivated it is important to remeber something else; the Washington DC Police are the most incompetent police force in the nation. It is entirely possible that they are unaware of what a citizens rights are and could not read a copy of the constitution if it was right in front of their face.
