courage the cowardly repubbblican

you may remember our post about the courage campaign working to stop cal. repubbbs from trying to dismantle the current federal electoral college system on a single state level.

(our personal argument is, if you want to get rid of the electoral college, you have to do it on a federal level and do it all at once. we've have no quibble for that.)

as first alerted us by c&l, it turns out that we won! the latimes:

a proposed california initiative campaign that could have helped republicans hold on to the white house in 2008 was a shambles thursday night, as two of its key consultants quit.

unable to raise sufficient money and angered over a lack of disclosure by its one large donor, veteran political law attorney thomas hiltachk, who drafted the measure, said he was resigning from the committee.

hiltachk's departure is a major blow to the operation because he organized other consultants who had set about trying to raise money and gather signatures for the initiative. campaign spokesman kevin eckery said he was ending his role as well.

there remained a chance that the measure could be revived, but only if a major donor were to come forward to fund the petition drive. however, time is short to gather the hundreds of thousands of signatures needed by the end of november. and backers said thursday that they believed the measure was all but dead, at least for the 2008 election.

" 'shambles' is the wrong word," said strategist marty wilson, who curtailed his fundraising efforts weeks ago. "the campaign never got off the ground."
how about "stupid"? is that the right word?

skippy is proud to have had a part, however small, in helping democracy towards this victory.

HOORAY!

Not that California cannot alter its electoral college apportionment, as other states have for years had a divvying up of electoral votes (and in truth, had this been in place nationwide, both Gore and Kerry would have won), but to change it in midstream without an appeal to the populace at large (make it a ballot initiative) is the worst kind of gerrymandering.

This is so very typical of the modern GOP mindset. The country is falling apart at the seams, and the Republicans' plan to sew it back up again is to rig the voting system in favor of their party. Some vision they got there. If the time they've spent screwing around with the system was spent actually governing instead, they probably wouldn't have to worry about losing elections.

Oh, that's right, I forgot. They don't want to govern, they want to lord it over the rest of us...

I wouldn't trust these weaselly bastards until the head is cut right off them and the body's stopped twitching. Keep an eye on the mofos, I say. Don't let them get up off the floor.
