dueling polls
congress's approval rating is even lower than awol's. of course, leave to every single hardly-ever-right wing blog (and one from bizarro world) to find that news as something to cheer about.
but we agree w/clammyc over at epluribus media, who thinks that the reason people dislike congress so much is because they ain't doin what they s'pose to be doin!

if the investigations don’t result in meaningful actions, and the status quo in congress continues, then the 2008 elections will be a lot closer than we would like them to be.
this country has lots of major problems that need to be solved. this is the democratic party’s chance to step up to the plate. we can’t wait until after the 2008 elections for much of this. and it is foolish to think that independents are going to flock to the polls based on a disappointing two years as democrats need them to.
to put it more bluntly, either shit or get off the pot. there is enough evidence to charge more than a few people and hold them in inherent contempt. either do it or don’t even bother investigating anymore.

there are some democrats of whom, on a case by case basis, we can be proud, institutionally the democrats are not doing the job they were elected to do. primarily iraq, but much else, which in my imnsho comes down to never developing any consistent strategy or even a coherent message for regaining congress’s role as a co-equal branch of government and standing up to bush. the fisa betrayal—passing a republican bill, in the dead of night, that actually lets alberto gonzales determine what kind of surveillance is legal—is just one example among many. i mean, how deeply can you suck to let that happen?
and balloon juice:will anyone consider that the reason ratings are so low is not a universal rejection of democratic principles as enacted by the new majority party, it is because the democrats are also mad at the democratic majority for not standing up to bush? because i guarantee the drop is from democrats angry at democratic cowardice, and not a yearning for a republican congress.
and d-day:yes, congress has low approval ratings. the lower numbers come entirely from democrats who are disappointed with the bush dogs giving the president whatever he wants, on iraq and on domestic spying. i hardly think that this will translate into a wholesale abandonment of the democratic party, but those bush dogs ought to read these numbers with concern. i do think there is a danger of the democrats squandering this moment by being timid and not offering a real challenge to the president on big issues where everyone's paying attention. the fisa bill killed what could have been decent momentum going into the august recess. what they do on iraq in september will go a long way to determining their future.
but mainly we agree w/eli at fdl, specifically his third choice of why the dems are acting like they are:3) they really are that stupid.

I hope when the revolution comes I'm not too old to say "I told you so."
