a bridge too far

rook's rant, a minnesotaian blog, tells us the i35w bridge had been deemed "structurally deficient":

bridge was rated 'structurally deficient' in 2005

the highway bridge that collapsed into the mississippi river on wednesday was rated as "structurally deficient" two years ago and possibly in need of replacement.
so, how many other bridges are out there waiting to collapse? obviously, our government has that answer. well, actually, has had the answer for several years. and what did our government do with this awareness? raise funds to initiate repairs or new construction? did they even begin planning? of course not.

the vetoed spending bills. that resulted in delays for repairs. oh, and let's not forget about the us house and senate and their dicking around with the alaskan bridge to nowhere.

explain to me again how this is good leadership? seriously. how is letting a city drown, bridges collapse, and billions be poured into a country that was not responsible for the worse terrorist attack against our country a sign of good leadership?
rook also links us to a cnn-captured security video of the actual collapse. we'd suggest everyone stop by rook's rant in the next few days to keep up on the news (tho rook is 300 miles away from the bridge, he is closer than we are).

as of now, most of the popular minnesota bloggers are on their way to some convention or other in chicago, so there is little coverage on norwegianity, pharyngula or tild, our other go-to blogs for minnesota. but we are sure the tragedy is in their thoughts.

addendum: thanks to the american street's states writes page, we find other minnesota blogs covering this story: alt text, blog jvstin style, eyeteeth, cheek, a work in progress, blog of the moderate left and dave's picks.

At Agitprop, we blame the Dear Leader.  And rightly so.

thanks for the link, skippy. but you're right that there are other blogs in minnesota doing good posts about the collapse. if you want some of the best, you should go to minnesota monitor.
