I don't think you understand what's going on here. It's a pay and retirement issue as well as a psychological need to return to rejoin the effort.
I'm torn on this. If it's truly voluntary and the military isn't forcing it, and they're making sure the injured soldier can perform all the duties necessary for the job he is going to perform, then I say for it.
That said, I don't particularly trust the military's mental heatlh and physical health evaluations. Coming from a family of veterans and working at a VA Hospital for some time, I'm not sure I'd beleive it if a the Army told me a soldier was mentally stable.
Also, it is common for injured soldiers to want to rejoin their company, their band of brothers, even after catastrophic injuries. It takes months of counseling to help them move on, many never do.
But when our military is forcing troops back into combat who previously had a broken back or plates on their ankles, it makes me wonder how much pressure will be put on amputees to go back..."Son your unit needs you, the doc says you're fine...we need you back son" that type of talk and pressure.
It's a tough call yet not unprecedented. What the hell was that Cuab Gooding Movie called, Men of Honor?
So I guess if the Army is not pressuring amputees to go back and they are making sure they are competent to do the jobs they will be asked to do so as not to endanger those around them, then I can support it. Can I trust the military to do all this? Not entirely.
Underneath it all I do think it reflects a desperation by the military unable to meet recruitment goals while facing the possibility of suring up to 300,000 troops into Iraq while widing the war into Iraq as well as fending off Turkey in northern Iraq.

OT, Hey guys Milo Freeman's blog, "The Calm Before The Sand" is being threatened.
There's enough info on your blog to ID you. Once it's done I'll forward it to your PAO and let your chain of command take care of this.
For the rest of you, if you are in or came out of the military as a liberal, it's a shame you didn't learn anything while enlisted. It would have been better had you died in uniform, because at least people could have looked back at your life and knew it served some useful purpose.
Col. Scott C. Smith, USMC, (ret)
I'm sure that's a true signature, of course.
