two conservatives walk into a bar. they buy it, then raise the prices, then complain about welfare cheats wanting free peanuts

continuing on a riff that our esteemed co-blogger mimus pauly started earlier today, some commentors over at huffpo discuss the idea of alleged conservative comedy. in responding to steve benen's musing over the same article that got mimus started, some casual huffpo readers pointed out the real reasons conservatives fail so miserably at humor; mainly, they have none themselves:

real humor requires a sense of irony and an underlying compassion, because, as twain said, the secret source of humor is sorrow. conservatives have neither, so they are not funny.
it's the bully mentality that keeps them from being funny. they think its funny to pick on the weak kid on the playground. a little creepy! try and find a funny nazi
sorry dude, those south park guys are the best around and they're conservatives. they make everyone laugh. ditto for mike judge.

colbert and stewart make no one laugh. they're as funny as the kid at the comedy shop who rips on airplane peanuts. and not quite as funny as carrot top."
they're libertarians. they're the ones who created that's my bush.

as for stewart and colbert, it takes a right-winger pearl-diving in twelve feet of denial to say that they "make no one laugh."

this is why conservatives aren't funny. humor has to be based at least partly on truth, and they have no idea what it is.

you mean the pot smoking, hot tube dwelling south park creators who have gone on record saying george bush is an idiot are conservatives? you mistake their equal opportunity fun-making for a political bent.

see, calling michael moore fat and unattractive doesn't make you a conservative. it makes you sighted.
conservatives are unfunny because a) they take themselves so damned seriously, and b) they don't know it. the left, though it also takes itself too seriously, has at least the virtue of knowing it. our best comics realize this and make it work for them. they poke fun at the right, while not letting us forget our own foolishness and that of our "liberal" leaders. (just look at the shit that clinton took from "left-wing" comics during his presidency.)

when conservatives like limbaugh and hannity try to do humor, it's not that they are being too nice to liberals that makes them unfunny. it's that they are being too nice to themselves. it's called self-righteousness.
