conservatives and the culture of death

i try to keep the cross-promotion to a minimum these days, but the ongoing process of state-sanctioned murder called "the death penalty" is a passionate issue for me. apologies in advance if i get strident on the issue - as in rename the penal system and dismantle the religious right:
if tookie doesn't deserve forgiveness, nobody does. if nobody deserves forgiveness, the churches are lying. if the churches are lying, where does that leave the religious right?
followed by "celebrity executions, from jesus to tookie":
this season, america celebrates a holiday whose premise is that god himself came to earth -- and was given the death penalty. tookie williams died at midnight on the feast day for our lady of guadalupe, mother of god and patron saint of the americas. how fitting that the gop and the religious right lobbied for the execution - and that arnold schwarzenegger, a catholic whose church opposes the death penalty, made the final decision.
more important than either of these posts, however, is mark kleiman's - because it addresses an execution that's still preventable. read it, and add your voice if you can.

in the meantime, i'll try to be a fun guy again tomorrow - assuming you thought i was before.

oh - and happy holidays, o'reilly.
